Tip of the cap to Quiksilver on this one. In an age when sessions and moments are uploaded to the algorithm in near real time, holding onto clips, then compiling them into a work of art takes vision, direction and commitment.
Washed is the Mountain and the Wave's latest investment in a good ol’ fashioned surf flick. No storyline, minimal b-roll, far from perfect, just straight up ripping for over half an hour. It’s the product of two years' worth of clips and hundreds of sessions documented by dozens of filmers in waves around the planet.
The full cast includes Griffin Colapinto, Mikey Wright, Kanoa Igarashi, Hughie Vaughan, Al Cleland Jr., Rio Waida, Lungi Slabb, Kael Walsh, Kauli Vaast, Jackson Bunch, Marco Mignot, Andy Nieblas and Rolo Montes. That’s six Championship Tour surfers, one alt style guy, an Olympic gold medalist, one 19-year-old aerial savant and three freakishly talented Australian freesurfers. There's a lot to digest and a lot to like.
While the surfing is consistently good across the board, Mikey Wright’s closer is worth a standing ovation. His preposterous straight-air at Lakey Peak was teased online, but that only made me want to see the flick more. My knees hurt just watching it. We don’t see much output from Mikey these days, but when he surfaces, he delivers full-speed carves and ferocious hacks without fail. He seems to be enjoying that Ryan Burch Pickle Fork to the fullest extent.
Ultimately, however, it’s Kael Walsh who gets the final section courtesy of his unhinged approach to Irish slab and clean full rotations in Western Australia. If Kael’s part whet your appetite, consider a main course in his new edit “Strung.”
It may not be the most cinematic of surf movies, but in terms of delivering impactful, high-caliber shreddery in part after part, Washed did its job. Consider hitting play next time you need some pre-surf juice. Don't forget to turn up the volume.
