The New York surfing community, and specifically Long Beach, is mourning the loss of one of their own. Austin Gibbons has died; he was only 27 years old.
According to reports, Gibbons suffered a seizure while in the water at Long Beach on July 10th, then subsequently drowned. Gibbons was a Long Beach native, and member of the Skudin Surf family – a surf camp owned and operated by big wave charger Will Skudin.
Following the news of his passing, Skudin Surf honored their fallen.
In an Instagram tribute, Skudin Surf posted: “We are heartbroken by the loss of Austin Gibbons, a cherished member of the Skudin Surf family for over 15 years. Austin began his journey with us as a young camper and grew into an exceptional instructor and mentor. A certified lifeguard and talented surfer, Austin was equally known for his warmth, compassion, and the deep care he showed for every camper he taught.
“In the wake of this tragedy, we are focused on supporting our community. Licensed mental health professionals will work with our staff, lifeguards, and campers as we navigate this difficult time together.”
Last year, Gibbons was in Hawaii during a massive swell – it was so big, in fact, that the World Surf League called off the Lexus Pipe Pro. But Gibbons paddled out at Pipeline. Amidst the massive waves, Gibbons took off on what was supposed to be his “last wave of the day.” But he reportedly drowned, and was brought back to life on the sand via CPR.
Following the drowning, in the hospital, he was placed in a medically-induced coma. And he later came out, throwing shakas from the hospital bed.
The news of Gibbons’ untimely passing is totally tragic. The New York surf community, and beyond, is gutted. Skudin Surf is reporting the following memorial services:
