In terms of ocean animals that surf, like, actually ride waves, dolphins reign supreme.
Look at the World Surf League’s Championship Tour – last season, there were a pod that shared a wave with Gabriela Bryan during her win at Margaret River in Western Australia; and more recently, a handful of ‘em were spotted riding a wave with Griffin Colapinto in the warm-up sessions at the current CT stop, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.
Seals, however, don’t have the surfing reputation that dolphins do. But maybe that’s starting to change.
Recently, a photographer in New Zealand was checking the waves, when he spotted a seal, riding waves with proficiency, at an empty lineup. Soon, the clip went viral, sountracked appropriately with the track from Seal (the musician), "Kiss from a Rose." Explaining the situation, the New Zealand Herald picked up the clip, and wrote:
“A Hawke’s Bay photographer says a seal he snapped trying out his local surf spot rode the waves ‘better than some of the locals.’
“Professional photographer and videographer Michael Farr took his young daughter for a short drive down to the carpark of the Te Awanga beach’s surf break on Tuesday morning when he saw a small, dark mass playing in the waves.”
After watching the seal catch multiple waves, Farr thought:
“I’m just like, ‘oh my gosh, go buddy, go’ because I’ve never really thought that they actually catch waves and like continue on the waves for a while.”
Pretty epic.
Meanwhile, seals and sea lions on the West Coast of the United States have been getting a bad rap, recently, as they’ve become aggressive, even attacking surfers. The cause if due to an algal bloom and domoic acid, which impacts their brains. It seems like the encounters with the “demonic” seals has died down a bit, but still…scary.
Much cooler to spot a seal absolutely shredding.
