Over the weekend, the International Canoe Federation held the Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban, South Africa.
But when it came to the final stretch of the men’s surfski division – a class of kayaks distinguished by their long, narrow body – the competitors encountered a bit of trouble upon dismounting at the finish line. In other words, the shorebreak conditions at Durban’s Westbrook Beach served up a circus of carnage.
See the mayhem below.
Kayakers bailing out of the boats as waves crashed over them, some nosediving into the sand, others attempting to outrun the waves while breached on the shore. The scene looked like chaos. And although the clip came originally from a local South African group of ocean enthusiasts called the Salt Rockers – who are “dedicated to sharing the thrill of the ocean through kayak fishing, spearfishing and other ocean activities” – the figurative bloodbath was enough to make it on the coveted KookSlams account.
As for the actual race, Australia’s Cory Hill came in first place, winning his fourth men’s surfski single crown. After the win, Hill told the ICF:
“I never have had the opportunity to race here in the past so to come out here on the big stage at the ‘Home of Surfski’ and perform is massive. I know my wife and kids and my mum and dad were back home in Australia watching the live stream and getting really excited and nervous. My game plan all came to fruition today. I wanted to take it out, be comfortable, finish strong and the current winds were in our favor so I’m really ecstatic to come away with this result.”
No mention of the finish line frenzy. And no word of any serious injuries – although, looking at the footage, it’s safe to say that more than a few competitors came away with a few bumps and bruises.
