Residents of Los Angeles’ South Bay have been baffled, for the past few days, due to a strange assembly of bubbles forming off the coast of Hermosa Beach.
Surf filmmaker Bo Bridges – who recently brought big waves to the even bigger screen at Cosm Los Angeles – captured footage of the mysterious simmering. And from there, the internet went wild. Was it…aliens? Whale farts? Russian submarines?
Turns out, there’s a logical explanation for what was going down.
“At first glance I thought it was a massive bait ball and was hoping to see a ton of Blue Fin Tuna popping out of that foam,” Bridges captioned his social media post. “Lot of guesses but still haven’t gotten to the bottom of it. If anyone knows exactly what’s going on, I’d love to hear more. It would come and go throughout the late afternoon.”
Local news put on their detective caps, and got to the bottom of the situation.
“It’s not aliens,” said CBS Los Angeles’ Mike Rogers. “It’s also not whale flatulence, as some have speculated it might be on Facebook.”
In addition to theories, some humorously bordering on the conspiracy side of things, residents swam or paddled out to the bubbles to get a better look. But Bridges drone angle provided the best view. And it’s just that – bubbles, maybe half a mile off the coast.
But what is it? Rogers continued:
“This is underwater fiber lines that run from the west coast all the way to Asia. What they’re doing, is they’re cleaning them out. In the process of cleaning them out, they blow a lot of air through the lines. And that’s what causes it to come through and bubble up to the surface. They’re doing this because Meta is renting some space on this line, and they need to add space to do that.”
Case closed. Not aliens, per se, but ol’ Zuck at it again.
