The surf world lost a legend over the weekend. Greg Browning, the surfer and filmmaker hailing from the South Bay of Los Angeles, passed away after battling ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
Browning came up as a rising surf star from Hermosa Beach, CA. He became the Los Angeles representative to the iconic Momentum Generation, appearing in the beloved and groundbreaking early films of Taylor Steele, alongside surfing greats of the era including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Shane Dorian, and more. Then, under the tutelage of Steele, Browning branched out and began making his own films – most notably, the darling road-tripping Drive-Thru series.
Along the way, Browning touched countless in the surf realm. And following his passing, many mourned, paid tribute, and shared memories of the gone but never forgotten icon. Here’s a handful.
“Last night we lost a one of a kind. Someone who always put everyone before himself. He was an inspiration in and out of the water - The creator of the drive thru - the legend that will never be forgotten and always talked about. Thank you Greg Browning for your friendship and love. May the force be with you.” – Donavon Frankenreiter
“We will miss you Greg! Countless memories and moments made growing up surfing. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us all and all the inspiration that followed. One of the most genuine, loving, caring people we’ll ever know. Giving love thoughts and prayers to all family and friends! Love you Greg!” – Eric Geiselman
“Rip Greg browning. @gregsworld To everyone that knew Greg personally there’s no such thing as a better person to be found. Greg left this world yesterday and it’s so sad for everyone who will miss him but he’s on the next surf trip his ultimate drive-thru. His beautiful soul is on another adventure. We Will see you on the other side Greg . You spread so so much love in your time here with us. We will never forget you…… rest in peace, brother.” – Brian Bielmann
“We lost a beautiful human and there is always a ripple effect through the people that he touched. Greg Browning @gregsworld left this world a much better place because of the human he was. One of those people that really cared about you and how you and your family was doing. He will be so missed by many but he left a lot of inspiration for all of us to be the best humans we can.” – Taylor Knox
“Some people live with such quiet kindness and courage that it leaves the rest of us in awe.
“World class surfer, iconic filmmaker of drive thru series and many other legendary films, 17 clothing founder, friend and epic father. We have been friends for 30 years plus and went through different life challenges but Greg was consistently the most considerate person I've ever met. But it was in his final chapter—facing ALS—that he revealed a deeper power. Not just in how he endured, but in how he showed up for others, even as his body faded.
“He never made it about him. He stayed kind, curious, and deeply intentional—offering laughter, perspective, and still lifting people around him when he had every reason to fold inward.
And even now, I’m still trying to wrap my head around just how much he gave.
“You’ll always be with us inspiring us to be more selfless, more giving and more like you effortlessly lived with love.” – Taylor Steele
“Greg has always been sunshine in human form. Now when the sun shines, I’ll know it’s him. He’s the best human I’ve ever met. He came into my life when I needed him most. I was a timid, unsure and insecure teenager and he took a chance to follow and film me my rookie season on the championship tour. He taught me how to make the best out of any situation, to look for adventure at every corner and always choose the glass half full instead of half empty. He was a friend, mentor and cool other dad. He watched me grow from grom to mom, fall in love, get my drivers license, graduate high school, get married and start a family of my own. How lucky am I? Was really looking forward to introducing ‘Olena to her Uncle Greg this summer. Even though she will never get to meet him, she will learn to love him. His picture rests on our TV stand where we see it everyday, she will hear about our travels together and what an incredible person he was. “People will forget what you said, what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Greg made us all feel something and he will continue to live on. I refuse to think of this as goodbye. This is just, see you later. He’s currently on his most epic surf trip yet. Look forward to getting in the water with him again one day and sharing a pancake breakfast together afterwards. Greg, the impact you have had on my life is immeasurable. I will love you forever.” – Carissa Moore
Rest in peace, Greg.
