Waves of sadness are rolling over the Indonesian and Australian surf communities, as news of Samsul “Sam” Kepompong – a surf instructor in Bali, with family back in Australia – has passed away following an accident involving what’s being called a “freak wave” while he was surfing.
Kepompong had traveled to Lombok Island, and was surfing Ekas Beach, where he was conducting lessons with a group. That’s when a large wave took him out, and broke his leash. He called for help from one of the other instructors, but they couldn’t get to him due to the size of the waves. He was swept out to sea, then his fellow instructor grabbed a boat to reach him for a rescue.
However, Kepompong died while on the way to the hospital. He was 33 years old.
In a GoFundMe account created by Kepompong’s cousin, Eva Flatley, the beloved surf instructor, friend, and family member was remembered. Also, it was a chance for folks to support the family for medical expenses and a memorial service. The GoFundMe added:
“Yesterday afternoon, we lost our beloved Sam while he was surfing outside Ekas. He was a friend, uncle, and son—someone whose kindness, laughter, and smile made the world a better place.
“Sam worked hard to support his family, especially his dad, who is the full-time carer for Sam’s brother with special needs. The last thing he would want is for his family to face financial stress while mourning his loss.
“If you’re in a position to donate, every dollar counts and will make a real difference for Sam’s family during this devastating time. Let’s come together to support the people he loved most and honor his memory with the kindness he always showed to others.”
As of publish, the GoFundMe has raised just over $9,000 AUD.
Rest in peace, Sam Kepompong.
