The Canary Islands are often referred to as: “The Hawaii of Europe.” Well, the Canaries and the Azores. It’s really a take-your-pick, who-you’re-asking scenario.

Regardless, the Canaries are an island chain off northwestern Africa, owned by Spain, and making it a quick jaunt for European holidaymakers and surf-seekers. And the Canaries share another similarity to their Pacific Ocean counterpart: localism.

From Tenerife to Lanzarote, locals have been known to protect their coveted waves from outsiders through intimidation and, occasionally, violence. And below, it’s the latter. After exchanging blows in the water, a local Tenerife surfer comes after a tourist couple – volcanic rocks in his hands – in a fury of localism-fueled rage. Check it out.

The Instagram account posting the video explains the story, saying at happened at Punta Blanca on Tenerife, and the supposed victims in this case are Venezuelan tourists, Alexandra Caraballo and Cristian Mederos. Immediately, upon arrival at the surf spot, the visiting couple were allegedly harassed by the local, “yelling at them from the water, demanding they leave and stating they couldn't be there.”

Continuing the story: “The images show how the situation escalated into a physical assault, with punches thrown both in and out of the water, a chase, and stones thrown, not only at Cristian but also at Alexandra and the people with them, in front of onlookers on the beach and without any police presence.”

The account condemns such actions, claiming: “Localism [is] understood as care and coexistence is very different from localism based on intimidation and attack. When that line is crossed, we stop talking about rules and start talking about violence, something that does not represent the values of surfing.”

For his part, the surfer throwing the rocks posted a rebuttal to the incident. You can check it out here, but it's in Spanish.

Where does localism stand in surfing today? Of course, things have things changed. But to what degree is it warranted in today’s surf world? Chime in below.
