Over the weekend, yet another tragedy struck the Canary Islands.
A group of tourists were swimming in Los Gigantes – a natural pool nestled in the cliffside against the open ocean in Puerto de Santiago on Tenerife – when large surf, and a few rogue waves, pounded the lagoon, and swept people out to sea. Sadly, four died.
Video footage has emerged showing the scene at Los Gigantes during the incident, as swimmers pack the natural pool, and the relentless surf batters the area. (Note: While the footage itself isn’t particularly graphic, people did perish amidst the chaos. Be advised.)

At the time of the incident, local officials had warned against entering the area, even putting up police tape. However, per the footage, it looks like many ignored the warnings.
Following the tragedy, Mayor Emilio Navarro told a local TV station (per Metro):
“All those hurt or killed were tourists. There’s a group that was younger, Slovakians and Italians, and there was another group all tourists, who had crossed the tape that had been put by local police or Civil Guard who have been working all week in this area and at other points along the coast.
“It’s impossible at times to make people understand the dangers of the ocean. The tape has to be replaced several times a day in some cases because it gets broken and people even insult police because they don’t want to leave.”
While the bodies of the four tourists were pulled from the water via helicopter, there was also a fifth victim who has yet to be found. According to local news, the search is ongoing.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time that something like this has happened in the Canaries recently. Just last month, also on Tenerife, three people lost their lives amidst high surf.
Following the latest episode, Mayor Navarro added:
“We ask people to pay attention to the signage put up by the authorities. It’s to take care of and protect everyone.”
