Malakai Hagley may not be a household name in surfing…yet.
But after his recent bomb at Mullaghmore in Ireland, things may change. The wave is unfathomably large, mutant, and downright terrifying. Yet, the 19-year-old United Kingdom native navigates the chaos with ease – at least from an outside perspective.
Check out the clip below.
Captioning the video, young Hagley wrote:
“Wave of my life. Thank you @_bystephen for nailing the clip.
“Massive thanks @andrew_cotty for showing me the ropes and putting me in the spot and massive thanks to the rest of crew for their guidance @louisthomashudson@jamesscarew I can’t thank everyone enough.
“Inspiring to see how everyone goes about this wave and it’s incredible being humbled by nature. Big respect @tom___knox getting to me on my wipeout too.”
And quickly, the praise started rolling in from a who’s-who of surfing greats:
“That looks fake! What a ride!” – Kelly Slater
“Wave of the season ! You surfed it like it was 4ft pmpa not 30ft wild mully.” – Andrew Cotton
“So sick.” – Nic Von Rupp
“Woah…” – Kalani Robb.
So, who is this young up-and-coming charger? Well, he hails from North Devon in the United Kingdom, and clearly, he’s been putting in the time up in Ireland under the tutelage of big-wave giants like Andrew “Cotty” Cotton. Speaking with Dawn Patrol, he said:
"I believe in continuous improvement, both on and off the competitive stage. To achieve this, I have a training regime which helps me reach my goals. I also actively collaborate with photographers, and videographers. These collaborations help me push the boundaries of my surfing prowess and yield compelling, one-of-a-kind content. I think this showcases my passion for the sport."
Judging by the clip above, he kept to his word. Keep an eye out for more crazy content.
