As someone with shortboards and thrusters taking up most of my quiver, I’m guilty of longboard prejudice. I assumed all 8-foot-plus boards were made from one template. A straight outline, wide nose, same with the tail, designed for shooting straight down the line. Grab one off the rack, it’s more or less the same.

Thankfully, Devon Howard and Wayne Rich have taught me otherwise. Last year, the two longboard aficionados collaborated on the CI Log, a utility model that was Channel Islands Surfboards’ first new longboard option in almost two decades. And now they’ve unveiled a second, more traditional piece of foam made with the nose in mind.

Wayne’s seasoned hands have sculpted high-caliber surfboards in California for more than 40 years. Combined with Devon’s footwork and modern savvy, they’ve developed a smooth single fin log that can stay high and tight in the pocket and not bog on a cutback. From their discussion above, it’s clear the two put a great deal of thought into this model.

The design intricacies are hidden in plain sight. Some of them have been refined through Wayne’s decades of work. There are three different planing areas from nose to tail, features meant to make walking the nose more accessible, but it’s not the only thing you can do with this board. Don’t miss the subtle hip near the tail as a pivot-point tribute to Al Merrick. And did you know longboards can have different rockers on both the rail line and the center line? Me neither. You'll have to hear Wayne explain that one.

After a long legacy of proving itself in the high-performance shortboard realm, CI has tapped serious talent to revitalize its longboard game. Hit play above to watch the two maestros go over every nuance of the brand's latest edition to the quiver.

“It’s really a lot of old stuff we’ve moved around in different ways to get a feel for what we’re trying to get to,” Wayne said. “We’re trying to get some performance out of the board and not make a taildragger, hit a turn and stop (kind of) noserider. CI is known for performance. If we can have some, we’re going to try to get it.”
