You surf long enough, you’re gonna encounter a shark.
For some folks, depending on location, shark sightings might be a common occurrence. For others, however, it might be a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
Either way, it’s a spooky experience.
And North Shore pro surfer Koa Rothman recently had a run-in with a tiger shark while surfing in Hawaii. Not his first, not his last. Still unnerving nonetheless.
Here’s how Koa broke down what happened:
“Dude…shark. I think I jinxed it by talking about it before I went out.
“Me and Mason were sitting there on the inside. We were sitting way in trying to get the little reform. And all of a sudden, there were four grown men scratching towards us, like, ‘we just saw a huge tiger shark!’
“We were like, ‘are you sure it was a tiger? Was there a white or black tip on it?’ And he was like, ‘no there were stripes; that thing must’ve been like eight feet. It was thrashing all over the place.’
“Pretty spooky. Then we just paddled straight in through the rocks. Of course, the one time I come and surf down here, and I talk about it before…I fully jinxed it. So heavy.”
It’s been an interesting couple months in Koa’s surfing life – first, he nearly died while surfing Pipeline, now a close encounter with a toothy predator. Perhaps he’s due for a little quiet time? A little surfing without the threat of dying, either by wipeout or shark?
We’ll see…
