Put down the phone. Stop scrolling. Let's go to the movies!

Because there are few things more fun than catching a surf movie in a theater with your local crew, SURFER's beyond stoked to get behind the screenings of a couple brilliant films coming to Orange County later this month.

Getting the party started, "Shaping The Future: The Lance Collins Story" lands at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach on Thursday, February 20. The show starts at 7pm and tickets are less than the price of a poke bowl. Collins, the creative shaping genius behind the iconic Wave Tools Surfboards label, helped solidify Newports 56th Street as "the hottest 100 yards" at a time when Quiksilver boardshorts were everything and surfing was going New Wave and neon.

Rolling into the weekend, "The Cigarette Surfboard" documentary touches down at the Rivian Theater in Laguna Beach on Saturday, February 22. Showtime runs from 6:30-9:00. For those who with as much disdain for cigarette butts on the beach as I do, this is a must-see film about the story of how the burnt out cancer sticks were turned into a very functional surfboard.

Tickets for this are free, all you have to do is register and get your name on the list. "The Cigarette Surfboard" is touring up and down the California coast over the next couple weeks, so if you can't make it to Laguna, be sure to check their site for other dates and locations. It's the story of upcycling at its absolute best.

More than just film screenings, both films will feature talk story sessions with the filmmakers and relevant VIPs. They'll be hosted by me, your faithful SURFER editor. So grab the popcorn and let's go! We'll see you at the movies.

Finally, there are more plans in the works for more movie nights at the Lido Theater this summer, so stay tuned for details coming up very soon.
