Milo Faure has an important decision to make. The 17-year-old Californian will soon surf in the WLS’s Qualifying Series event at Puerto Rico’s La Marginal. But whose flag does he sport: his family heritage or the region he was born and raised?

“It’s funny because my dad put me as French, and I wanted to be American,” he said. “But we don’t know how to change it, so I guess I’m French for now.”

Milo could change his representation later, but now he’s sticking with the country both his parents are from. The tall, lanky teenager speaks the language fluently but calls Southern California home. And his surfing reflects years honing the region’s points. Based in Agoura Hills, he’s well positioned to split his seasons between Malibu in the summer and Ventura in the winter.

With so many talented groms and young surfers across the state and beyond, it can be hard for a young surfer to stand out from the Instagram herd these days. How then does one break out and leave a mark? Well, Milo’s smooth and composed style is a great place to start. His approach makes sense considering his upbringing. It started as a child when for about three years his family dropped him off at the mushy walls of County Line. “I didn’t even know other waves existed,” he recalled.

Malibu and other waves in the region beckoned soon after. Milo has grown a lot since then and has developed into a polished surfer point break surfer but can also scrap when the waves dwindle in the summer. He’s got technical chops in the air and a sound rail game, and not just for a teenager.

His style is reminiscent of his coach and mentor and former Kai Neville film star Dillon Perillo. “I started working with Dillon three or four years ago,” Milo said. “He films and coaches me. He’s been a really good mentor, and he’s a great surfer as well. It’s nice to have him be so supportive and help improve my surfing.”

Milo is just starting his competitive career, but he also has ambitions for films and projects. His first trip to Indonesia this year, for example, showcased his talent on a tropical canvas. He saved up for the trip by teaching surf lessons in Malibu. And of course, anyone within striking distance of Point Conception has to nod to the influence of a certain regular foot from the 805.

“I love freesurfing, obviously in Ventura you’ve got Dane (Reynolds) and all those guys,” he said. “Right now I’m starting the QS and hoping to get a good result but I also love to freesurf and film videos. So I’m hoping to do both."
