Ever dreamed of owning your own home near good waves? Yeah, of course, who hasn't? The problem is that it is a lot easier said, than done. The average home price in Hawaii is $831k, in California it is $1-$4 million, neither are very attainable unless you're making big bucks. There is a far lesser-known alternative though that brings the actual home cost down into the range that we mere mortals can fathom, a building style that can bring your costs way down as long as you have the land to put it on.
We understand that having access to land, let alone owning it, is not easy (nor cheap), regardless, it is worth knowing about Earthen homes (aka "cobbins"), and how to build them, in case you do ever luck yourself into a nice parcel of land near some waves of your liking. This style of building goes back thousands of years across the globe and, even after all this time, still outperforms modern homes in many ways.
First of all, cost of building is astronomically lower since a majority of materials are sourced directly from the Earth, namely mud and clay, and is then bound to recycled materials like pallets (in the video above), car tires, glass bottles and more. Secondly, they are supremely weather resistant to both fire and hurricanes with numerous examples of such homes withstanding wildfires in California and even Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico--events that wiped out thousands of modern homes. Lastly, there are plenty of resources for those who want to do it themselves. Instead of needing a general contractor and a team of workers, you can team up with friends and family to get 'er done.
There are even plenty of workshops geared towards teaching the skills to interested students of all ages. Ngalang Kalla, an epic eco surf camp in Sumba, Indonesia, hosts various workshops in an incredible setting that exemplifies the harmony of such structures. In California there's also Sage Stone Man, who offers multiple workshops throughout the year.
