“A major, major storm blew threw last night,” Jamie O’Brien, huffing and puffing with a shovel in hand, begins his latest vlog from the sand at Waimea Bay on Oahu.

With lots of rain, comes high water levels. And that was the case with the Waimea Bay Valley, following a hefty downpour, which led to city officials coming down to the beach, and assisting the surfers in digging out the reservoir and letting the river wave flow.

Was it the biggest Waimea river wave ever? No. But there was a lot of water flowing.

As always, the flow begins as a trickle, turns into a stream, magnifies into a river, then transforms into a raging torrent. And that’s when everyone grabs their boards, and attempts to ride the fleeting wave before the river runs its course…until next time.

Like we mentioned before, it wasn’t the biggest, per se, at least not in height. But it was vast, spreading far and wide across the beach. The biggest came a few years back, when the river went absolutely psycho, and JOB nearly died – according to him.

“That wave just tumbles me, and tumbles me, and tumbles me,” JOB explained that time. “Then, boom. It lets me out where the river meets the ocean. And the [ocean] waves were 15 feet. Huge Waimea. Probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done in my life.”

This time, though, there were some epic river surfing moments. And frequent Waimea Bay river wave flyer, Mason Ho, tagged along for the ride.

“As you can see, we absolutely destroyed this beach,” JOB commented. “Literally, like 75 yards wide, and the ocean is just pure chocolate."

As for the environmental concerns, which when it comes to storms, rainwater, and spillways flowing into the ocean, JOB addressed that as well:

"People are watching this, and they’re like, ‘It’s bad for the environment.’ Either way, it’s going to break. My buddy’s house is up in the valley, and his house would’ve flooded if we didn’t break it. We did it for him. And a little bit of fun.”
