The sensation associated with hydrofoil surfing, quite often, is likened to flying. It makes sense because you’re literally hovering above the ocean, and the foil cuts through the water, limiting drag, and creating a floating feeling. But that’s mainly when it comes to foil surfing in small waves.
In big waves, and being towed in on a foil via PWC, it must feel like…a human cannonball? A peregrine falcon (the world’s fastest animal with a top speed of 200 mph)? Sure, something like that.
Matt Etxebarne Aguirregomezkorta, the Basque Country big wave foil surfer, knows what it feels like. And recently, during the historic swell that slammed California at the end of last year – producing a potential new world record wave, 108-feet, surfed by Alo Slebir – Matt got whipped into a few waves on his foil at Maverick’s. It begs the question: Biggest wave ever foil surfed at Mav’s? See below.
Previously, immediately after Matt’s session at Mav’s, we reported it was the “first-ever” appearance of that craft at that wave. Maybe so. But if that’s the case, then this full video above documents not just the “first” foil session at Maverick’s, but also the biggest wave ever foil surfed there.
Who knows. Perhaps.
Regardless of the claims, here’s how Matt recounted his dance with Mav’s:
“Foiling Mavericks today…
“It was one of the craziest days of my entire life and probably the biggest waves of my life too!
“The waves just kept getting bigger and bigger all day long! Everyone had their own crazy waves and it was crazy to see! Many thanks to @carptarpitz for these waves and to @mavericks_rescue for these incredible photos
“I still can’t believe what we’ve been through today!
“Many thanks to all the people who made this trip possible, especially my big brother @pierrecaley”
Foiling into the future.
