Fukuoka Japan, host city of the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, last hosted the Worlds in 2001. That year two young upstart American won their first gold medals: Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. Coughlin went on to win 12 Olympic medals and 20 at the Worlds, while Phelps became the winningest Olympian of all time with 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold.
