In 2025, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina enjoyed his best season to date, reaching a career high of World No. 14. Despite such a successful year, the Spaniard will no doubt be disappointed with the fact that he has yet to win a tour-level title.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 2025 Season Recap

So Close Yet So Far

The 26-year-old reached an impressive four finals throughout the year, yet won none of them. Davidovich Fokina has an unfortunate track record of collapsing in big moments.

In February, he looked to be cruising to a first-ever career title at the Delray Beach Open. He led 5-2 in the deciding set and had two match points before he completely crumbled, losing five games in a row, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Such collapses you would only expect to see on the odd occasion. Unfortunately for Davidovich Fokina, lightning struck twice in the same season.

Five months after his heartbreak in Delray Beach, Davidovich Fokina had the opportunity to make amends, as he reached the final in Washington.

He must have been overcome with déjà vu, as, yet again, he led his opponent 5-2 in the deciding set. This time, though, he had three match points. But, as was the case in February, he couldn’t convert them, and Alex de Minaur took advantage, coming back to take the title in a tiebreak.

He lost his other two finals in straight sets, first to Tomas Machac and then to rising star Joao Fonseca, who, by contrast, has won both of his tour-level finals at just 19 years old.

Taking the Positives

Despite not winning a title, Davidovich Fokina won an impressive 44 tour-level matches across the season, only bettered by seven other players.

He also recorded five wins over top-10 opponents – only Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz achieved more. Such success saw Davidovich Fokina climb from World No. 68, where he started the year, to World No. 14. It appears to be a case of ‘when’, not ‘if’, Fokina will win his first title. Although there are no guarantees in tennis, his best chance to win one might well have been and gone.

Shock Exclusion

To add insult to injury, after coming up short in every final he played, he was surprisingly not selected for Spain’s Davis Cup finals team. Despite being the second-highest-ranked Spaniard, behind none other than Alcaraz, Spain’s captain, David Ferrer, elected not to include him.

Perhaps including Davidovich Fokina may have changed Spain’s fortunes – they lost in the final to Italy; had he been selected, things may well have been different.

Going into 2026, the 26year-old Spaniard will, of course, have his eyes on picking up a first-ever title, and he certainly has the game to do so; the questions lie with his mentality.
