Alex de Minaur will be starting his North American hard court swing at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. Ahead of the tournament, the Australian No. 1 spoke to the media about his level and goals. The ATP tour is dominated by the top 2 players, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz who have shared the last seven Grand Slam titles among them.
However, amongst a few other top 10 players, Sinner and Alcaraz have withdrawn from the upcoming Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, leaving the draw wide open for perhaps a new Masters 1000 champion this year.
It will be interesting to see how players make use of the Washington and Canadian Open to improve their record and place in the rankings in the absence of the two fiercest players of the tour. Speaking about his level, de Minaur commented, as quoted by ATPTour:
I already have the experience, game knowledge, and physical strength to push my limits. I believe that in the next three or four years, I will achieve significant results, overcome important obstacles in my sports career, and demonstrate that my best level is still ahead.
The 26-year-old has a long way to go to achieve these results. He has 9 ATP titles, mostly on hard and some on grass and is yet to win a Masters 1000 title. He is yet to secure a win against the top two, with a 0-10 head-to-head record against Sinner, having played the Italian on clay and hard court, and a 0-4 head-to-head record over Alcaraz, having played him on all surfaces.
Alex De Minaur also expressed his delight on spending time with fiancee Katie Boulter, who was competing at the joint ATP/WTA 500 event, admitting that her presence provided additional incentive to return to the Washington Open.
I’ve always wanted to come back and it does make it a lot better having Katie around and being a combined event for us to be able to spend some time together, being on the same timezone and just living somewhat of a normal life.
Boulter, however, faced an opening round exit to Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Sakkari will next face second seed Emma Navarro in the Round of 16. Boutler and De Minaur will also pair for the reimagined mixed doubles at the US Open.
Alex De Minaur has returned to Washington, D.C. for the first time since 2022 with a shot at returning to the ATP Top 10 rankings ahead of the US Open, where last season he reached his third consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal after deep runs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
He has no points to defend here or in the upcoming Masters 1000 tournaments ahead of the US Open. The Washington Open marks his next tournament after the Wimbledon Championships, where he lost in four sets to seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16.
He commenced his Washington campaign at the John A Harris Grandstand with a straight set victory over China’s Yunchaokete Bu. While the first set was quite tense, ending in a tiebreak, De Minaur moved past comfortably in the second set as he clinched the victory 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. De Minaur will now face Jiri Lehecka in the third round of the tournament.
