The ATP Tour 500 tournament in Rotterdam suffered another blow Wednesday, losing another Top 10 player in Alexander Zverev. Following Carlos Alcaraz’s earlier withdrawal from the tournament, Zverev has now confirmed he will also withdraw due to a niggling ankle issue. Following the absence of the defending champion, Alcaraz, the news of Zverev’s withdrawal is a further blow to the tournament organizers, with tournament director Richard Krajicek saying, “Given his history, we would of course have loved to see Alexander back on court, but we understand the decision.” The tournament further wished him a smooth recovery via their X account.

Zverev himself, commenting on his decision, said, “I find it incredibly unfortunate that I have to make this decision. At the ABN AMRO Open, I was already given a chance as a young player, and that’s why I always enjoy returning.” He, however, added that he did not want to take any risks, which led to the decision. This will be the third consecutive year in which Zverev does not participate in the event in Rotterdam.

The German has already had a busy start to the season, culminating in a hard-fought semifinal loss to eventual champion Alcaraz, in what was the third-longest match in Australian Open history. There is no doubt that it would have taken a lot out of him physically. He would now like to take a three-week break to focus on recovery and hopes to be back, fit and firing, probably in time for the Acapulco, Mexico event.

As for ABN AMRO Open tournament organisers, they would hope no further big names pull out before the tournament gets underway, with the main draw beginning on February 9th.
