Tennis superstar Alexander Zverev seemed out of sorts during his quarterfinal match against Daniil Medvedev, as the German not only made uncharacteristic errors but also seem arguing with his coaching team.
The second seed faced an in-form Medvedev on Monday, with both men being familiar with the other's game due to their time in the juniors. However, it was Medvedev who was in control from the start, as he recorded a comprehensive 6-3 6-3 win over Zverev to advance to the semifinal.
The Russian won the opening set behind some strong play from the baseline. Zverev was unable to develop a rhythm, which led to him hitting several errant shots and ultimately taking his frustrations out on his coaching team.
"Why the f**k are you laughing?" yelled the World No.3 at his father, who also serves as his coach. Zverev's father and the rest of the team were courtside, observing the German's match from his player's box.
The 2021 US Open champion leads Zverev 14-7 in career meetings on the ATP Tour. Medvedev has won the last five meetings against the German, with Zverev's last victory coming at the 2023 Cincinnati Open. Prior to that match, Medvedev had again won four consecutive matches against the former World No.2.
Zverev was one of the favorites to win the title in Beijing. Despite a difficult three set win over tricky Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the previous round, there was hope the German would discover his form later in the tournament and make a strong claim for the title.
However, Zverev will have to wait a little bit longer before he wins his second title of the 2025 season. Conversely, Medvedev is yet to win a title this year, and will face American Learner Tien for a spot in the final.
