Alexandra Eala’s childhood admiration for Maria Sharapova has come full circle. The 21-year-old Filipina star is set to appear on Sharapova’s Pretty Tough podcast, years after watching the five-time Grand Slam champion as a young girl and taking inspiration from her rise in tennis.

Sharapova was one of the players Eala looked up to most during her childhood. Her style, competitive mentality and presence on and off the court all left a lasting impression on the young Filipina.

Now, Eala is getting the opportunity to sit across from the player she once watched from afar, creating a remarkable moment in her own tennis journey.

Alexandra Eala’s Reaction to Meeting Her Childhood Idol Says It All

Eala’s excitement was evident from the very beginning of her conversation with Sharapova.

“Oh my God. Oh my goodness. Nice to meet you,” Eala said.

“Look at you. Thank you for finding time for us,” Sharapova replied.

The exchange is particularly special given how long Eala has admired the former World No. 1. She has previously recalled being just five years old when she first saw Sharapova and immediately becoming fascinated by her.

“I was probably five when I first saw her. She was always dressed nicely, she was loved by everyone, and I wasn’t an exception,” Eala said.

That admiration only grew as Eala got older. Sharapova’s game and competitive mentality became just as important to her as the image that had initially caught her attention.

“Maria was my super idol growing up. She was it – I loved the way she dressed, I loved the way she plays, her mentality, and the way she presented herself.” The connection between the two also became more personal earlier this year. After Eala stunned World No. 3 Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, Sharapova reacted to a video of the Filipina’s victory with a simple message: “A star!”

What began with a five-year-old Eala watching her idol on television has now turned into a conversation between the two.

Alexandra Eala Looks to Regain Her Momentum After Difficult Stretch

The timing of the conversation is also interesting given where Eala finds herself in her career.

The Filipina enjoyed a breakthrough stretch earlier in 2026, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon before winning her first WTA 500 title in Washington. Those results helped her break into the Top 20 for the first time.

Her momentum has slowed since then. Eala exited the US Open in the third round after letting a lead slip away against Iva Jovic before suffering another defeat to Tatiana Prozorova in Singapore.

She then endured another painful setback at the Asian Games. The top seed led China’s Wang Xiyu 5-0 in the opening set of their semifinal but eventually lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to settle for a bronze medal.

The recent struggles have added another layer to Eala’s development, particularly when it comes to handling pressure and difficult losses. Those are among the challenges she can now discuss with someone who spent years dealing with the same demands at the highest level.

For Eala, however, there is something uniquely special about this particular conversation.

The player she first discovered at five years old is no longer simply the star she watched and admired. She is now sitting across from her and having a conversation of her own.
