All-American battle sees Danielle Collins weather Strasbourg Sofia Kenin storm
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

It is a big week for Danielle Collins with the American defending final points from Internationaux de Strasbourg having already dropped down the rankings a considerable chunk over the past week. But she is at least through her opener.

Collins saw off Sofia Kenin in a battle she seemed to cruising in for the most part until the latter half of the contest. She won 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 in the most advert for a WTA match ever.

After dominating the opener, her tennis fell off the cliff in the second as Kenin continued to grow in confidence. But in the end, Collins had a reverse as she brought the first set form back into the decider to ease through in the end.

She sits in a pretty tough section of the draw though. Next could be Emma Raducanu or Daria Kasatkina then it will be the winner of the tie between Jessica Pegula and Anna Kalinskaya in the Quarter-Finals if she wins through that.

Kalinskaya won earlier today as she weathered a second set fall off winning it 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 against Caroline Dolehide. Jessica Pegula is known not to like the game style of Kalinskaya so it will be an intriguing tie for that. In particular Berlin last year and Miami this year have been tough assignmentsw.

She has a near perfect record against her but it is very much one that doesn't tell the full story. Elsewhere Ashlyn Krueger could be facing Emma Navarro. She now takes on Beatriz Haddad Maia who saw off Clara Tauson 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The winner could face Navarro who takes on either Magdalena Frech or Anna Blinkova next up. Xinyu Wang also disrupted a potential meeting between Elena Rybakina and Eva Lys winning 6-4, 7-5. While Emma Raducanu is still to come against Daria Kasatkina.
