All-American battle sees Marcos Giron dump out World No.4 Taylor Fritz at Rome Open
IPA

It is all on the Geneva Open for pre Roland Garros prep for Taylor Fritz who has been dumped out of the Rome Open by his compatriot, Marcos Giron in a stunning win on Saturday afternoon.

Giron delivered a marvellous masterclass to win 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in two narrow tie-breaks. Considered as the least favourite surface for most Americans, Giron no doubt will be revelling in getting one over his compatriot and the top dog in terms of men's American tennis.

Giron fought back from a 4-2 deficit in the second set capitalising on all three of his break points against Fritz to fire back. His aggression and tactical play gleamed the end result as he neutralised the Fritz serve to great effect.

The Italian crowd supported Giron surprisingly seemingly seeing the underdog as the best chance of an upset win. It is only as second win ever for Giron over Fritz who leads the Head to Head 5-2 now. As for Fritz given also his recent injury travails with his abdomen, it is a blow he doesn't need.

He will be one of the top seeds next week in Geneva alongside Casper Ruud and Novak Djokovic in a superb field so gets one final chance to put it right. For the American men, it is only one title this season on clay with Jenson Brooksby in Houston.

Ben Shelton too has reached the final in Munich but Giron's win over Fritz shows that unlike the women who are thriving on the surface, there is some life in this group. Peyton Stearns and Danielle Collins both led the way today in WTA with wins over Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek and add another American drama to the list for Giron.

He now faces Hubert Hurkacz and could yet face Casper Ruud in the next round who will be favourite to get out of this section of the draw.
