What was already a bad day for the top American men's tennis players just got substantially worse.
On Friday afternoon, Ben Shelton had to retire during his match against Adrian Mannarino. The No. 6 ranked player in the world suffered an apparent shoulder injury on the point that sealed the third set for him. Although he wanted to continue fighting and complete what would've been a five-set marathon, he decided it was best to put his left shoulder on ice.
Shelton, who won a Masters 1000 title earlier this summer, was seen telling his box that he was dealing with the "worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life." We're certainly hoping he'll return to action in the near future.
Roughly than an hour after Shelton's run at the US Open came to an end, Frances Tiafoe suffered a devastating loss to Jan-Lennard Struff. Despite being a heavy favorite coming into Friday's third-round match, he lost 4-6, 3-6, 6-7.
Tiafoe, a two-time semifinalist at the US Open, usually plays his best tennis in New York. Unfortunately for the Maryland native, he just didn't have his A-game today.
An American man hasn't captured a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003. If that drought is going to end this September, then Taylor Fritz or Tommy Paul will have to get it done.
Fritz, who made it to the 2024 US Open final, has proven he can dominate on the hard court. He'll take on Jérôme Kym this evening at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
As for Paul, he's coming off a marathon match against Nuno Borges that ended at around 2 a.m. this Friday.
There's still a chance for the U.S. to get it done, but their odds took a massive hit today with Shelton and Tiafoe going down.
