Iga Swiatek Predicted to Follow in Novak Djokovic’s Footsteps After Poor String of Results on Clay
IPA

Iga Swiatek‘s run in clay-court tournaments before the French Open came to an end on Saturday (May 10). The third-round match at Foro Italico was her ninth tour-level match against Danielle Collins, who registered her second victory over the Pole.

Swiatek last lifted a title at the French Open last year by breezing past Jasmine Paolini. Prior to last year’s Roland Garros, Swiatek lifted her first Madrid Open title and her third trophy of the Italian Open by beating World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in both finals.

This year, however, Swiatek defeated Jelena Ostapenko and Coco Gauff at the Stuttgart Open and the Madrid Open, respectively. She will be entering the French Open, scheduled to start on May 25, without a title under her belt.

After the Italian Open, two WTA clay-court events will be held before the French Open: the WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg and the Morocco Open. Former World No.7 Marion Bartoli wonders if Swiatek will ask for a wild card in a tournament before the French Open just like Novak Djokovic, who was handed the wild card by the Geneva Open.

It’s going to be a tricky situation. Will she ask for a wildcard in one of the events leading up to Roland Garros? That is a question mark. Novak Djokovic for example, has requested a wildcard in Geneva. I think for Iga, she has lack of match play.

Marion Bartoli told Sky Sports

Djokovic too hasn’t yet lifted a title since winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year. Since that victory, the 24-time Grand Slam champion stuck on 99 ATP titles, reaching two finals: at the Shanghai Masters and the Miami Open, losing both, to World No.1 Jannik Sinner and Jakub Mensik , respectively.

On the clay swing this year, the Serb got knocked out of his opening rounds in Monte Carlo and Madrid, following which, he withdrew from the Italian Open, missing the tournament for the first time since 2007. He played in Geneva last year but Tomas Machac knocked him out in the semifinals.

Iga Swiatek reveals reason behind her defeat to Danielle Collins

Iga Swiatek hit just 15 winners and made 22 unforced errors against Danielle Collins’ 32 winners and 15 unforced errors. In Rome, the best clay-court WTA player of this generation lost a first-round match five years ago. Since then, Swiatek never really lost a match.

She had a 21-1 win-loss record in the Spanish capital before this year, with the lone defeat she registered being a walkover she gave to eventual winner Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals in 2023. So why such a subpar performance this time? In Rome in fact, Swiatek failed to move into the quarterfinals in singles event for the first time this year.

I just don’t think I’ve been present to fight and compete. I focused on the mistakes, and it’s my fault because I’m not doing things right. I feel like I only concentrate on what I’m not doing well. Clearly, I am doing things wrong, I need to reflect and change.

Iga Swiatek said at the press conference

Swiatek will no longer be a top 2 player for the first time in over three years. She will start the next week as a World No.4 player. The two Americans, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula (lost in the third round) will fight it out for the second and third positions. Their defeats in the event won’t help Swiatek move into the top 3, and Swiatek could also lose the No.4 spot if two-time Grand Slam singles finalist Jasmine Paolini wins the Italian Open.

Arthur Fils Can’t Wait to ‘Hear People Shout’ His Name As He Plans Comeback in Canadian Open After Injury Setback

Arthur Fils‘ name is on the entry list for the Canadian Open, but it’s uncertain whether he indeed will be making his comeback. Fils hasn’t yet played a tournament since the French Open. In his home Grand Slam, the 21-year-old, after knocking out Nicolas Jarry and Jaume Munar, reached the third round for the first time, but his back stress fracture forced him to hand the walkover to Andrey Rublev. Fils had hoped to recover before Wimbledon but couldn’t. I’m really happy to be playing again. I feel better and better every day. I can’t wait to be back on the court, to do my best and hear people shout my name. Injuries are part of an athlete’s life. I have no choice, it’s part of my life, and I will have other injuries during my career, although I hope they won’t be too serious. Arthur Fils told L’Equipe It took eight weeks for the injury to heal. Fils, however, is not in a rush as he knows that he has an ample amount of time to win tournaments on the back of strong performances. Right now, we weren’t in a hurry by not playing Wimbledon, we were maybe supposed to resume in Washington, but we felt it was much too short. We’ll see how it goes here. Arthur Fils added Fils has never progressed beyond the first round of the Canadian Open. He, in fact, has never reached the semifinal of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. Thrice he has played the quarterfinals in the events of this category: this year’s Indian Wells, Miami Open, and the Monte Carlo Masters. Fils is 21-10 this season. The World No.21 hasn’t yet reached a final but has made it to the quarterfinals multiple times and the semifinal just once– at the Barcelona Open, which he lost to eventual runner-up Carlos Alcaraz. How has Arthur Fils performed this season? Arthur Fils is a three-time singles winner. His career’s first title came at the 2023 Lyon Open, where he defeated Francisco Cerundolo. A few months later, he reached the final of the European Open but was unsuccessful in defeating Alexander Bublik. Last year, the Frenchman beat home favorite Alexander Zverev in the Hamburg Open final and Ugo Humbert in the Japan Open final. He kick-started his campaign this season at the Hong Kong Open. After his defeat to Humbert in the Australian Open third round, Fils lost the Rotterdam Open and the Dubai Open without making deep runs. But at Indan Wells, he was on the verge of reaching the semifinals. He, however, was unsuccessful in defeating 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. Following his defeat to eventual champion Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open quarterfinal, Fils failed to capitalize on his first-set lead, eventually losing the quarterfinal against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters. After the Barcelona Open, Fils failed to make deep runs in the next three tournaments he played, including at the French Open. Before this season, Fils had never won a match at Roland Garros. Last year, Fils had kicked off his campaign on the North American hard-court swing at the Canadian Open but lost his opening-round match to Humbert. In Cincinnati then, Brandon Nakashima ended his run in the round of 32. Canada’s Gabriel Diallo knocked him out in the second round of the US Open. Fils has never progressed beyond the second round at Flushing Meadows. In the 2024 Wimbledon, he produced his best performance in a Grand Slam event. He made it to the fourth round but was unsuccessful in overcoming Alex de Minaur.

Rangers Sign Former Stanley Cup Champion to Tryout Agreement

The New York Rangers are adding to their forward depth ahead of their upcoming training camp. The Rangers are entering a new chapter of their organization under new head coach Mike Sullivan. After missing the postseason last year, the organization is trying to rebound and respond accordingly in 2025 and 2026. Former Stanley Cup champion forward Conor Sheary is the latest player to join the new-look Rangers. The veteran forward agreed to a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the club and will look to earn an NHL deal with his performance in training camp and the preseason. Sheary is a veteran of 593 NHL games. Originally an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after completing his collegiate career. Following a year with the Penguins' AHL affiliate, he forced his way onto the NHL squad after posting 36 points in his first 30 games of the 2015-2016 season at the AHL level. His debut NHL season went better than ever expected, and he was a key part of the Penguins' lineup that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Sheary's coach at the time, both at the AHL and NHL levels, was Mike Sullivan. Now, he'll get the chance to reunite with the coach under whom he won two championships. In addition to playing for the Penguins, Sheary has played for three other NHL franchises. The Pens dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres before the 2018-2019 campaign, but he would return to Pittsburgh the following season at the trade deadline. After his second stint with the Penguins, he joined the Washington Capitals. He played three seasons in Washington, D.C. before landing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he spent the past two years. Over his 593 career games, he's compiled 124 goals and 143 assists for 267 points. His best NHL season came during the 2016-2017 campaign, his second in the league. He scored 23 goals and added 30 assists for 53 points in 61 regular-season games.

New report suggests Christian Wilkins release related to 'incident' with teammate

There may be more to Christian Wilkins’ recent surprise release from the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported Saturday that "some sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders' fatigue and release" of Wilkins. The nature of the incident is not clear. However, many believe the Raiders had a very good reason to move on from Wilkins considering the money they had invested in him. It also suggests the Raiders saw no alternative if they went straight to a release. Wilkins was dumped by the Raiders just one year into a four-year, $110 million deal. The Raiders suggested Wilkins failed to take rehab seriously as he tries to work his way back from a foot injury. Other teams do not appear to have the same concerns about Wilkins as the Raiders did, and he should find a new landing spot fairly easily. That is one of the reasons some suspect there is more to the Raiders’ decision than they are publicly saying.

Celtics Rumors: Damian Lillard, Neemias Queta, Ben Simmons

Damian Lillard was briefly linked to the Celtics after being waived and stretched by the Bucks, but that possibility came and went quicker than a Jrue Holiday text. Turns out Holiday did shoot his shot. “As soon as I was waived … he sent me the eyeball emoji,” Lillard said at his introductory presser in Portland. “I already knew where I was pivoting to when he sent it, but I didn’t want to say nothing too soon, so here we are.” “Here” is back in a Trail Blazers uniform. And while Lillard isn’t expected to play this season as he recovers from a torn Achilles, the idea of him as a long-term Jayson Tatum insurance policy briefly crossed Boston’s radar. That was about as far as it got. As MassLive’s Brian Robb wrote, the Celtics never had the financial path to compete with Portland’s three-year, $42 million offer. Boston only has the $5.7M taxpayer MLE to work with — and using that might’ve meant shedding some other salary just to stay under the second apron. Who’s starting at center? In a new mailbag, Robb projects Neemias Queta as the likely starting center if the roster stays put. That would give Boston a lineup of Queta, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White, with the last two spots up for grabs. Payton Pritchard vs. Anfernee Simons at point guard? Sam Hauser vs. Georges Niang at forward? Maybe Josh Minott sneaks into the mix? Yeah, it’s July. But hey, the debates have begun. No Davison, slim Simmons ddds Boston officially parted ways with JD Davison this week, ending a three-year run with the former second-round pick. According to Robb, the team just didn’t see NBA-level growth. And what about that open roster spot? Ben Simmons is out there. But Robb pegs the odds of Simmons landing in Boston at just 10-20 percent, mainly because he’s expected to get better money (and probably a bigger role) elsewhere. More NBA News Rumors
