'Andre doesn't need the job' - Andy Roddick chimes in on Andre Agassi's recent collaboration with Holger Rune

With the 2025 DC Open kicking off the road to the US Open later this summer, tennis star Holger Rune was spotted practicing under the watchful eye of tennis legend Andre Agassi. Having not lived up to expectations over the last few seasons, working with Agassi could benefit Rune, says retired American pro Andy Roddick.

The Danish star made his ATP breakthrough in 2022, where he won the Paris Masters title by defeating five top-10 players, including Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in the final. Furthermore, he would climb into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings, after starting the year ranked at World No.99.

Rune would reach a career-high ranking of World No.4 the following year, weeks after making a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon. After falling out of the top 10 the following year, Rune would return to World No.9 after defeating Alcaraz to win the 2025 Barcelona Open.

After some disappointing exits at the French Open and later Wimbledon this year, Rune appears ready to make changes as he attacks the second half of the season. The 22-year old was spotted training with eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi ahead of the DC Open, leading many to speculate on whether this could be a long term collaboration.

Roddick believes this change could help Rune

Speaking on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the 2003 US Open champion weighed in on the possible partnership between the two men.

"The number one reason why I like this, is because Andre doesn’t need the job," began Roddick. "And every other person who has kissed Holger’s a-- and asked him for a job, has needed that job.

"I’m sure they didn’t sign a two year deal. I’m sure it’s like ‘hey, let’s get some input. Let’s see if we can’t course correct. Let’s see if you can’t tap into my experiences, the things I did right and the things I did wrong.’ Which are sometimes more important and Holger is going to listen to Andre Agassi.”

Agassi has some coaching experience, having briefly worked with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the past.
