Andy Murray dishes ‘unpopular opinion’ to propose a dedicated South American leg on the ATP tour
Abaca Press

The 2024 Argentina Open, which recently came to an end, had a number of pretty thrilling matches this time, while the Rio Open, which started a few days later, is set to have its final on Monday. There are not a lot of tournaments that take place in South America currently, and the Cordoba Open and the Chile Open are perhaps the only tournaments that come to mind. This is something that, according to British tennis star Andy Murray, needs to be changed.

Murray recently took to X and talked about the amazing tennis fans of South America. He said that a supportive and passionate crowd in sports is a cultural aspect there and thus it is a shame that South America does not have its own separate swing and a 1000 event.

Unpopular opinion. South America should have its own dedicated swing on the tennis tour with its own masters series. The way the fans support the tournaments there is incredible. Amazing atmospheres and tennis is clearly part of their sporting culture. Vamos @atptour!

In the 2024 Argentina Open, Carlos Alcaraz was the top seed but he surprisingly got eliminated by Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in the semifinal. The tournament was eventually won by Facundo Diaz, who defeated the same Nicolas Jarry in the final.

The Spaniard then proceeded to participate in the Rio Open, where he suffered an ankle injury in his first round and had to give a walkover. On Sunday, Sebastian Baez and Mariano Navone, two Argentinians, will lock horns in the final of the Rio Open to win the ATP 500 event.

Andy Murray’s mom supports his statement on the ‘South American swing’

After Andy Murray penned down his opinions on having a potential South American swing in the future and why it is necessary, his mother Judy Murray reshared his tweet to show her support to his statement.

Sport is nothing without fans. We should all remember that

Both Andy and Judy Murray have received much love from South American tennis fans for pitching for them and understanding their passion for the sport.

As far as Andy Murray’s next tournament is concerned, he will take on Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championship tomorrow. His run in the 2024 Qatar Open came to an abrupt end in the second round following his loss to 18-year-old Jakub Mensik, who went on to reach the final of the tournament. However, it was still an improvement from Murray’s performances in the Montpellier and Marseille Opens.
