Andy Murray Slams Wimbledon for ‘Ridiculous’ Decision During Jannik Sinner’s Match Against Grigor Dimitrov

Jannik Sinner moved into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the fourth consecutive time after Grigor Dimitrov injured his right pectoral muscle while hitting an ace during the third set. Sinner, for the first time in the tournament, dropped a set.

Dimitrov had secured a 2-0 lead and around 8:30, officials closed the roof of the Centre Court because of bad light. This annoyed two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray a great deal. The three-time Grand Slam winner, who was watching the match from his home, felt that there was enough light at that time. Murray wrote on X:

So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match. At least an hour of light left….well over a set of tennis can still be played..its an outdoor tournament!

Commentators defended the closing of the roof as they felt the wind was causing a bit of a problem. BBC commentator Tim Henman thought playing inside the roof was an “ideal condition“, while Greg Rusedski said on BBC Radio 5 Live that the closed roof favored Sinner more.

Sinner will next be facing Ben Shelton , for the second time this season. They had met in the semifinal of the Australian Open, which the World No.1 won before breezing past Alexander Zverev to win his third Major. The 23-year-old holds a 5-1 head-to-head lead over the American ace.

Jannik Sinner analyzes Grigor Dimitrov’s level

Jannik Sinner was expected to force a comeback or suffer a huge upset in that fourth round against Grigor Dimitrov. But right after their 2-2 score in the third set, Dimitrov fell on the ground in agony due to the injured pectoral muscle, ending what was expected to be a thrilling clash.

His good friend Roger Federer was in the stands and wore a worried expression on his face as Dimitrov cried in pain. The Bulgarian found it difficult to even lift his arms up as he clasped his hand during the handshake with the chair umpire.

Sinner too showed great sportsmanship as he rushed toward his opponent to check on him and later helped him put some of his stuff in his bags and carry them off the court. Later, during the on-court interview, he said, “I don’t take this as a win at all“, calling the whole thing an “unfortunate moment for all of us to witness“.

He was serving impressively, very precise and very fast. He changed the game very well. There was a bit of a breeze, and he used the wind in the smartest way. I felt like I had prepared for the match the right way, although the execution was even better. He was playing great tennis; after closing the roof, we didn’t really know what was going on, although we had some good exchanges until the start of the third set.

Jannik Sinner later said at the press conference

Even Sinner suffered an injury on his elbow, but the severity of it is not known yet. At the press conference, the first seed said he would undergo an MRI scan. Before this match, Sinner held a 4-1 head-to-head record, and this was their first meeting this year. The 34-year-old scheduled the clash with Sinner after knocking out Sebastian Ofner in straight sets in the previous round.

Dimitrov has now retired mid-match for the fifth consecutive time in Grand Slam events. This season, a groin injury forced him to give a walkover to Francesco Passaro in the opening round of the Australian Open. Then at the French Open, a thigh injury forced him to withdraw during his opening-round match against Ethan Quinn.
