Andy Roddick has highlighted the reason behind Aryna Sabalenka’s dominant performance against Amanda Anisimova at the US Open final. The 27-year-old lifted her fourth career Grand Slam after successfully defending the US Open, becoming the first woman to win back-to-back crowns at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 2014.
The win was an important one for Sabalenka, who came into the competition at the back of two heartbreaking defeats in the final of two major tournaments. She suffered her first Slam final loss of the season at the Australian Open, losing to American star Madison Keys in three sets, despite being the favorite to win the title.
Then at the French Open, she reached her first final at the clay major but lost to another American player, Coco Gauff, 7-6(6), 2-6, 4-6. At the match, she coughed up 70 unforced errors, the most errors conceded by a player at the 2025 Roland Garros. Even at Wimbledon, she had an impressive run before losing to Anisimova in three sets.
The US Open was the final Grand Slam of the season and the only chance to prove she had learnt her tough lessons in the previous tournaments. She displayed her best level on the court against Anisimova, overcoming the American star in straight sets to win her first Grand Slam of the season.
During a conversation on the Served Podcast, Andy Roddick revealed that there were question marks around Sabalenka’s performance in Grand Slam finals ahead of the US Open, but she continued to push herself until she finally got hold of the major title:
She didn’t hit that for a winner. It’s I get nervous because I haven’t won Wimbledon and I play this big-hitting Anisimova. And then, I go to New York and I probably have more question marks than when I enter any other event, for the entire year. And obviously that mean’s I am going to win and clutch up in the final. No. This is why sports is amazing. Sabalenka continues to put herself in these positions and if you do it enough, people are going to remember your wins.
Sabalenka ended the 2025 season on high having reached three Grand Slam finals for the first time in her career. It is also the second time that the Belarusian star has reached the semi-finals of all four major tournaments. She has now extended her lead at the top of the WTA rankings with over 3,000 points.
Aryna Sabalenka has been the most outstanding player on tour this season. She has reached eight tour-level finals, including three Grand Slams. The 27-year-old won four of the eight tournament finals. However, she has many events to compete in before the season ends and would aim to win more titles.
During an interview with the WTA, she listed the number of tournaments she will compete in before the WTA Finals in Riyadh in October. But she added that she plans to take a mini-vacation in Miami and Dubai before the Asian swing:
I’m going to stay in New York for a little while. Then I’ll go back [home] to Miami and then I think to Dubai in preparation for the Asia Swing. For now, we are planning to attend both [WTA 1000s in Beijing and Wuhan, China].
Sabalenka competed at the China Open last year and reached the quarter-finals before losing to Karolina Muchova . At the Wuhan Open, she defended the title after defeating home favorite Qinwen Zheng in three sets in the final. She ended her 2024 season by reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Finals, falling to American star Coco Gauff in three sets.
