Anna Kalinskaya may have exited the US Open earlier this week after a hard-fought battle against World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, but the Russian star remains one of the most talked-about names on the WTA Tour — and not just for her tennis.
In a recent interview, Kalinskaya revealed that she has often been approached by fellow tennis players seeking more than just hitting practice. When asked if colleagues on the tour had ever tried to ask her out, the 26-year-old didn’t shy away from giving a candid response.
“Tennis players more often before. Now I’m older, I don’t know. For some it’s no chance at all. Someone wrote like 10 times and then gave up,” Kalinskaya admitted.
Pressed further on who the persistent suitor was, she dropped a big name from the ATP circuit.
“I’ll say it now but just… Holger Rune,” she laughed, before adding, “He writes to everyone. He deserves all this (rejection). He thinks too much of himself or maybe he's just too hopeless. But he’s not the only one (who has approached).”
Kalisnkaya also went on to say that she doesn't even reply to people she's not interested in, leaving their messages on read. "Now he'll be happy that I even saw it," she jokes.
Rune, currently one of the brightest young talents on the ATP Tour, has previously been called out for similar behavior. Russian player Veronika Kudermetova had revealed that the Dane attempted to approach her as well, though she firmly turned him down, pointing out that she is married.
Kalinskaya herself has had a public relationship with Italian star Jannik Sinner, though the pair are rumored to have split up. Kalinskaya went on to add that it was difficult to date tennis players on the tour. "I know a couple of guys, my friend also dated a tennis player," admitted the Russian. "They're kind of unusual, and they're a bit depressive to me, they're a bit too fixated for me."
"Girls are also fixated on results, but I haven't noticed that girls would be- I think girls are more positive," explained Kalinskaya. "Guys, if they fail to win a match, or don't reach their goal- it's everything for them."
Kalisnkaya said that the girls on the tennis tour had a much broader look about life than men, who were obsessed about their careers and achievements.
Despite the off-court drama, she continues to establish herself as a formidable presence on the women’s circuit, with her recent performance against Swiatek proving she belongs at the highest level
For now, Kalinskaya seems more focused on her career than on any advances from fellow professionals — and she’s not afraid to call out unwanted attention.
