Arthur Fils is the latest name to react to the news that Carlos Alcaraz will not be participating in this year’s Roland Garros.
Like most of the tennis world, he was emotional to hear about it. After all, the event has lost one of its biggest draws and top contenders.
Given what this could mean for his own chances, it would be understandable if Fils felt a mix of emotions. But he spoke with genuine respect for Alcaraz.
After learning about Alcaraz’s injury, he said: “It’s bad news.” Fils went on to explain just why the 21-year-old is going to be so missed. “He’s fantastic, a great friend. I wasn’t aware. It’s very sad.
“I think we’re all going to miss the absence of a great champion, and he is one of the best players in tennis history.”
This is a loss not only felt by those who participate but also by supporters worldwide. Few would argue against that statement.
Fils isn’t the only one to comment on this update. Jannik Sinner has also spoken out about Alcaraz’s withdrawal.
It’s never easy for players or fans to see top names in the sport sidelined by injuries, but there will be a quiet sense of opportunity among the rest of the field.
With only Sinner left standing from their two-man hold on Grand Slam titles, the door is wide open for someone else to step in.
If Sinner happens to stumble at any point, it could pave the way for a new name on the trophy. And Fils has every reason to believe he could be that player.
The Frenchman will have home support behind him and has already shown his strength on clay by winning the Barcelona Open earlier this month.
Beating Sinner is still a huge challenge, but with just one clear favourite left in the draw, belief across the field has definitely grown following Alcaraz’s withdrawal.
