Aryna Sabalenka is undoubtedly the most outstanding women’s player on tour this season and perhaps over the last ten months. However, she failed to reach the final of the Wimbledon Championships after losing in three sets to Amanda Anisimova on Thursday (July 10). After the loss, Sabalenka revealed that she’s proud of her consistent performance on the court this year.
Sabalenka has won 51 matches on tour this season, more than any player in the women’s circuit. She also sits at the top of the WTA rankings with a 3,741-point lead and has won three titles. The World No.1 has been to every tournament quarter-finals, except for the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships.
But the three-time Grand Slam winner has also suffered a lot of disappointment this season. She reached the final of the Australian Open for the third consecutive time but lost the title to Madison Keys. She then reached the final of the French Open for the first time in her career but fell short against Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka has been to seven finals this season but has only won three of them. She was seeking to become the first woman since Serena Williams to reach four consecutive Grand Slam finals, but Anisimova stopped her by beating the World No.1 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach her maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
After the match, Sabalenka was asked how she viewed her 2025 season so far. The Belarusian revealed that it has been a great season this far, but far from perfect. She added that she hopes to return to Wimbledon next year, hungrier for the title:
The results are impressive; I’m already qualified for Riyadh, and it’s only mid-year, that has never happened to me before. Although I lost many finals, some tough matches in Grand Slams, I still believe the consistency I’ve been able to show is remarkable. There are still many things I’ve done that I’m proud of. This experience proves that next year, I’ll come back here hungrier; that’s what the toughest defeats do, they help me return stronger.
Sabalenka is now 3-6 against Anisimova on tour. She had beaten the American star at the French Open when they faced each other in the fourth round and was seeking to do the same at Wimbledon, but the 23-year-old fought hard to overcome Sabalenka. Anisimova will now take on Iga Swiatek in the final of Wimbledon.
Aryna Sabalenka had reached the Wimbledon semi-finals twice in her career before facing Amanda Anisimova on Thursday. She was the favorite to win the clash despite her poor head-to-head record against the American, but things didn’t turn out well for the Belarusian star at the Center Court.
During the aforementioned press conference, she revealed that she currently has a hate relationship with Wimbledon. She added that the only way the relationship can turn romantic is if she finally lifts the title:
Currently, I have more of a hate relationship with this tournament, but I really hope that at some point, I can turn that around and have a more romantic relationship. Of course, if the day comes when I win it, I will look back and remember all these defeats, thinking that I still made it.
Sabalenka will now look to take a rest from the tour ahead of the North American hard-court season. She’s expected to compete at the Canadian Open before Cincinnati and eventually the US Open, where she’s the defending champion.
