Aryna Sabalenka has announced her withdrawal from a WTA 1000 tournament just a week after her bid to win her first Grand Slam title of the year was crushed to pieces in the semi-finals. The World No.1 now revealed that the reason for pulling out of the North American hard-court event is due to fatigue.
Sabalenka has been by far the best player this season, having dominated the women’s circuit. The Belarusian star has been to seven tour-level finals this season but has managed to win just three of them. Also, her hopes of winning a Grand Slam have been crushed by three American players.
She was beaten by Madison Keys in the final of the Australian Open, a tournament she sought to win for the third consecutive time. At the French Open, she got to the final for the first time and was the favorite to win it, but she fell to Coco Gauff in three sets. A week ago, she was seeking to reach her first Wimbledon final, however, she fell to Amanda Anisimova 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the semi-final.
The 27-year-old has played in twelve tournaments this season. She left the grass-court season without a title after reaching the Berlin Tennis Open and Wimbledon Championships semi-finals. She has a lot of points to defend in the second half of the season, being the defending champion at Cincinnati, the US Open, and Wuhan. She has now decided to take enough rest before continuing the season.
She revealed via a statement that she will not play at the Canadian Open, which starts on July 26 in Montreal. The three-time Grand Slam champion added that she’s taking enough rest to give herself the best chance of success this season:
I’m looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I’ve decided it’s in my best interest to skip Montreal. I’ll miss my amazing Canadian fans, but I’m already looking forward to seeing you all next year. Thanks for your understanding and support; it means the world to me.
Sabalenka’s withdrawal will not jeopardize her position as World No.1 as she reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open last year. Also, she played at the event because she didn’t feature at the Paris Olympics last year. Most of the players who played in the Olympics pulled out of the event in 2024.
Aryna Sabalenka will be heading to the US Open with an adamant determination to win her first Grand Slam of the season. The 27-year-old has come close twice this season but failed to win a major. At Wimbledon, she let Amanda Anisimova defeat her despite being the favorite to win their clash.
After the loss at the All England Club, she revealed that Grand Slam losses only make her hungry to win it next year. She added that despite her shortcomings this season, she’s proud of her performances on the court:
I think even though I lost a lot of finals, I lost tough matches at the slams this year, I still think that the consistency I was able to bring till this moment, it’s impressive. Still a lot of things to be proud of. This experience shows that next year I’m only hungrier and angrier. These tough defeats help me to come back much stronger. I have huge hopes for the next year.
Sabalenka’s only titles this season came at Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. If she can defend Cincinnati, the US Open, and Wuhan, she will still have a great season despite the two Grand Slam final losses.
