Despite shutting down the idea herself, talk of Serena Williams making a tennis comeback still hasn’t gone away.

The speculation kicked off after she rejoined the drug-testing pool earlier this month, but Williams was quick to address the situation and put any comeback talk to rest.

Taking to X, she posted: “Omg y’all I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”

Even with her clear denial, Aryna Sabalenka has still weighed in on what it would mean to face the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Sabalenka shares thoughts on facing Serena Williams

During an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Aryna Sabalenka talked about her upcoming Battle of the Sexes match against Nick Kyrgios, which is set for 28 December.

Piers Morgan asked Sabalenka what she made of the rumours surrounding Serena Williams’ possible return and how she thought a match between them might play out.

“From what I know, not at all. But she applied so it means that she is planning to play something, that’s for sure. Maybe for the Olympics it is too early, but maybe the US Open next year. You never know. But it’s going to be fun to watch.”

She added: “I mean, I cannot predict that. But I would definitely go out there and give my very best. I know that at my very best I can beat anyone.”

The American star stepped away from tennis in 2022 after a 27-year career that saw her win 23 singles Grand Slam titles.

When Sabalenka and Williams met on tour

Sabalenka and Williams met just once during their careers, but it came on a big stage. It was the 2021 Australian Open, with a quarter-final spot at stake.

The match went the distance, with Williams edging out a close final set to book her place in the last eight.

Williams went on to reach the semi-finals in Melbourne that year, where she was beaten by Naomi Osaka, who later won the tournament.
