Aryna Sabalenka Urges Critics to Leave Over French Open Fallout in Fiery Wimbledon Press Conference

Aryna Sabalenka faced backlash after her comments following a loss to Coco Gauff in the French Open final. She said Gauff didn’t win because she played incredibly well, but because she had made too many mistakes. Sabalenka also claimed that Iga Swiatek, whom she had beaten in the semifinals, would have defeated Gauff if they had played.

So when Sabalenka stepped up for her Wimbledon press conference after a semifinal loss to Amanda Anisimova, she wasted no time setting boundaries. The Belarusian is yet to win a Grand Slam in 2025. Sabalenka said in her Wimbledon press conference:

You’re not gonna see a Roland Garros press conference. Anyone who was waiting for that, you can leave right now.

Her French Open remarks had stirred criticism, particularly from Gauff herself. Many saw the comments as dismissive. A day later, Sabalenka issued a statement walking back her words and credited Gauff for earning the victory.

The tension from that incident still lingered, and Sabalenka seemed eager to avoid reopening the controversy. Her blunt opening at Wimbledon suggested she had learned from the fallout in Paris.

Aryna Sabalenka takes another jibe before leaving Wimbledon presser

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is still chasing her first Grand Slam title of the season. She began her Wimbledon press conference by addressing the backlash from her Roland-Garros final loss. The tone remained sharp throughout, as she ended the session with a similarly firm stance. Sabalenka remarked:

Hahaha you didn’t get anything.

Amanda Anisimova now holds five wins in eight meetings against Sabalenka. When asked why the American has been so successful in their matchups, Sabalenka pointed to the grass surface. She explained that it makes it difficult to counter Anisimova’s powerful game.

Anisimova has now made history at Wimbledon. She is the first player born in the 21st century to reach the women’s final there. Shortly after, Iga Swiatek became the second, cruising past Belinda Bencic in straight sets. Anisimova joins an elite group of young finalists that includes Andreescu, Swiatek, Raducanu, Fernandez, Gauff, and Zheng.

Although both Anisimova and Swiatek were born in 2001, they have never faced each other on the professional tour. Their only meeting came in juniors, where Swiatek won in straight sets at the 2016 Junior Billie Jean King Cup. This Wimbledon final will be the 10th in the Open Era between two players born the same year—and the second in a row at SW19.

Amanda Anisimova hopes to match Serena Williams

Amanda Anisimova has made headlines by reaching the Wimbledon final after a stunning upset over World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. This marks the biggest win of her career so far. She is also the first American woman to reach the Wimbledon final since Serena Williams in 2019.

Born on August 31, 2001, in Freehold Township, New Jersey, Anisimova moved to Miami at age three. She was introduced to tennis by watching her older sister train. Her junior career took off quickly—she won the US Open girls’ singles title in 2017 by beating Coco Gauff and reached the French Open final in 2016. These results helped her rise to No.2 in the junior rankings.

Anisimova began her pro career in 2016 after receiving a wildcard into the US Open qualifying rounds. She won her first match against world No.124 Verónica Cepede Royg but was knocked out in the following round. Her breakthrough came in 2019 when she upset Aryna Sabalenka to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

That same year, she made more history by becoming the first player born in the 2000s to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. She beat Simona Halep to get there but eventually lost to Ash Barty. Anisimova climbed to a career-high ranking of No.26. Though she struggled to follow up that success, she returned to the spotlight by reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2022—and now, she’s gone even further.
