Day 2 in Athens features several intriguing storylines as players look to settle into the indoor conditions and build early momentum at this new stop on the calendar, which might be their respective final outing of the year. With the first round still in full swing, every match carries weight — not only for rankings, but for closing the season on a strong note. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?

ATP Athens Day 2 Predictions

Damir Dzumhur vs Jacob Fearnley

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Dzumhur’s quick feet and flat angles can frustrate opponents indoors, and he’s been battling well at the Challenger level to keep his match rhythm. However, maintaining his level across two sets has been his biggest hurdle. Fearnley has made strong progress this year with his first-strike game, especially when he gets his serve working and finds forehand finishes early in rallies. He’s embraced these bigger stages, and that free swing mentality could pay off in Athens. If Fearnley can keep Dzumhur on the defensive instead of counterpunching, he might not give the Bosnian many openings.

Prediction: Fearnley in 2

Alexandre Muller vs Jan-Lennard Struff

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Muller has compiled a strong run of results and thrives on outlasting opponents through clean patterns and steady depth. He rarely gives matches away. Struff, however, is a far more explosive presence, and his serve-plus-forehand combination becomes especially dangerous under a roof. With a couple of qualifying matches already under his belt, he should arrive with rhythm. Muller makes you earn every point, but Struff has the gear to take the racquet out of his hands if he lands enough first serves.

Prediction: Struff in 3

Stan Wawrinka vs Botic van de Zandschulp

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Wawrinka continues to show that when the ball sits up, his backhand can still dictate almost any rally. Indoors, that shot becomes an even bigger asset. Van de Zandschulp has had bright patches this season, especially when he serves well and uses his weight of shot to finish from mid-court. But managing physical dips has been an ongoing challenge for him. If Stan serves with decent accuracy and keeps rallies on his terms, he has the tools to carve out a tight win.

Prediction: Wawrinka in 3
