Day 2 of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing is packed with great matches all day. 11 first-round matches are scheduled, and each one of them has the potential to be a thrilling encounter. This article features #2 seed Alexander Zverev, who takes on Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate. But who will advance?

ATP Beijing Day 2 Predictions

Francisco Cerundolo vs Learner Tien

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Francisco Cerundolo has struggled to find his best level in the last couple of months and will be looking to find some rhythm this week. This will be a tough opener for him, as Learner Tien is playing some solid tennis and will be hard to overpower on these courts. They are playing for the first time, which adds an element of unpredictability. I am sensing a close three-setter with the Argentinian prevailing in the end.
Prediction: Cerundolo in 3

David Goffin vs Arthur Rinderknech

Head-to-Head: Goffin 3-0 Rinderknech

How many times does it happen that a player gets the opportunity to take revenge for a loss after just two days? Arthur Rinderkech gets the chance to do it as a lucky loser after losing to David Goffin in the second round of qualifying. I expect him to be better behind his serve and be ready for Goffin’s aggressive returns. However, the head-to-head clearly indicates that Goffin enjoys this matchup and reads the big serve well. I am counting on the Belgian player to beat Rinderknech again.
Prediction: Goffin in 3

Alex de Minaur vs Yunchaokete Bu

Head-to-Head: De Minaur 2-0 Bu

Yunchaokete Bu returns to the tournament where he had an amazing run to the semifinals last year. He will be hoping to produce another magical week, but his form hasn’t been great, and a close first-round loss in Hangzhou would have hurt. An early loss here will take him out of the Top 100, and that seems likely, as he has been handed a mighty task. Alex de Minaur looked in supreme form at the Laver Cup, and if he brings that level, he will win this match. These two have already played twice this year, and I expect the same outcome.
Prediction: De Minaur in 3

Alexander Zverev vs Lorenzo Sonego

Head-to-Head: Zverev 5-0 Sonego

Alexander Zverev looked physically and mentally below 100% at the Laver Cup, and it will be interesting to see how he performs this week. He will be tested right from the get-go, as Lorenzo Sonego is a tough opponent and gave a great fight the last time these two played. Zverev dominates the head-to-head, but he is not playing his best tennis, and Sonego can capitalise on this. However, Sonego will struggle to hit through Zverev on the slower courts.
Prediction: Zverev in 3
