The final at the ATP 500 event in Beijing will feature Jannik Sinner, as expected by almost everyone before the tournament began, but the other finalist is a significant surprise. In the half of the draw with Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Alejandro Dadidovich Fokina, among others, it was 19-year-old Learner Tien who made it to his first-ever ATP-level final, facing a trial of fire against the World No. 2 and the 2023 champion of this event. But who will raise the title?
Head-to-head: first meeting
This is certainly not the final matchup the vast majority expected before the tournament started, but it is always good to see young players having a big breakthrough and Tien definitely earned his spot in the final, winning four consecutive matches as the underdog with some excellent tennis, even if he definitely got a bit fortunate with two back to back retirements from Musetti and Medvedev, who even served for the match in the semifinals today. Despite finding himself in the final, it seems highly unlikely that he is ready for the task of beating Jannik Sinner in a hard-court final, given his current limitations as far as serve and power go.
It’s definitely possible that this is an interesting matchup in a not-so-distant future, but at this point in their respective careers, it would be a tremendous surprise if Tien managed to win. The most likely outcome of this match is Sinner’s far superior firepower overwhelming the American, giving him no room to breathe, with Tien being under significant pressure in most of his own service games, given the weakness of his delivery. It will still be interesting to see this matchup for the first time, but anything other than a Sinner win would be a significant upset.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
