David Gonzales-Imagn Images

The last of the round-of-16 ties have been played in the China Open, nicely setting up a mouth-watering set of quarter-final fixtures ready to be staged in Beijing. With the likes of Jannik Sinner, Alex de Minaur, and Jakub Mensik already confirming their places in the last-eight the day before, other top players were hoping to do the same.

There was mixed emotions from the Italian duo of Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti. While Cobolli failed to progress, Musetti overcame the boos to book his place in the next round. Daniil Medvedev and

19-year-old Tien batters Cobolli

It has been a phenomenal year for the highly touted American Learner Tien. He has continued this positive form with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the world number 25 Cobolli, in a dominant performance. This is his second 500 quarter-final of the year, after making it to the Mexican Open last-eight.

Tien and Cobolli traded breaks for much of the first set, with the pair clincally taking the break points which cropped up. Eventually, Tien found himself serving for the set, in which he took in the second time of asking. It was much more ominous in the second set. After going a game being, Tien went on an explosive run, winning five consecutive games, before serving it out to complete a fantastic performance.

'Apologetic' Musetti cruises past Mannarino

Musetti has entered the court to a chorus of boos and jeers, targeted at him after his on-court comments about fans coughing in his opening match in Beijing against Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard. This was the main headline before his next match against 37-year-old Adrian Mannarino, but he managed to get over this to record an impressive victory.

On the back of losing in the Chengdu Open final, the Italian is looking to make up for the disappointment. He started the match by clinching nine of the first ten points, before staying on serve until Musetti claimed a one-set advantage. The pair traded breaks at the beginning of the second set, but the two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist went on to sweep five of the next seven games to set up a first meeting against Tien.

Medvedev gets back on track with big win

It has been a dreadful campaign from the former world number one. Racking up just one Grand Slam win, while reaching just one final, which he lost against Alexander Bublik. Now down to 18th in the world, the Russian needs a big performance to help him push back up to where he was, and the China Open could be the place to do it, as he continues to adapt to his new team. He sealed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alejandro Davidivich Fokina to reach the quarter-finals.

The 2021 US Open champion took a 4-1 lead, following three elongated games where the pair each found breaks of serves. The Russian kept his cool and comfortably served out the rest of the set. He stole an early break in the second set but was pegged back swiftly after by his Spanish opponent, before repeating it a few games later. Medvedev clinched his third, and definitive, break of the serve, before seeing out the tie. He will be hoping to replicate his 2023 campaign, when he reached the final but was pipped to the title by Sinner. A repeat of that final is very much still on.

Zverev squeezes past Moutet in thriller

If Alexander Zverev wants to stay in the top three in the world, he needs to go on a deep run, possibly even win some titles with his Australian Open final defence swiftly coming up. The German was put through the races against Corentin Moutet, but he managed to get past the resilient Frenchman, despite winning less points.

Moutet failed to take three break points to go 3-2 ahead and was punished in the next game when Zverev took a 4-2 advantage. However, when serving for the set Moutet levelled it up. Zverev would earn a second chance to serve it out, and made no mistakes this time, saving three break points along the way. At this point the pair were pushing each other to the limit, playing some fantastic tennis. Moutet picked up a crucial break halfway through the second set and forced a third set.

Moutet continued his great spell by breaking in the first game, but the world number three brought it all square straight after. The match then fell away from Moutet after Zverev broke to make it 4-2, and wrapped up the tie to set up a clash against Medvedev for the 21st time on the ATP Tour.
