After an exciting second round of tennis at the ATP 250 Lexus Eastbourne Open, quarterfinals will take place featuring two home Brits. LWOT previews and predicts the upcoming Thursday matches. One of the quarterfinals is yet to be decided, pending the result of a thriller between Taylor Fritz and Joao Fonseca that was suspended due to darkness.
Head-to-head: First meeting
35-year-old Daniel Evans was back to his best in a 6-4 3-6 6-3 upset win over Tommy Paul on Wednesday. It was Evans’ second Top 20 win of the grass court season, and he looks primed for a good result at Wimbledon next week if he can keep this form up. Both players have frustrating and tricky groundstrokes, so this could be a match of each player outwitting one another. Jenson Brooksby looked strong in a second round win over Nuno Borges, but the Brit will have the crowd on his side and should just barely reach the semifinals. Brooksby will have to get off to an early lead fast, and he should tire out the 35-year-old if he can win the first set.
Prediction: Evans in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Ugo Humbert got a much-needed win over Lorenzo Sonego to make his seventh ATP tour-level quarterfinal on grass. Notably, he’s 5-1 in ATP grass court quarterfinals. If he can take out a seasoned player like Sonego, he should be the favorite to take out Harris, should he serve at his best and limit double faults. Harris faced just two break points in his second-round win over Mattia Bellucci, and he’ll have to put up similar numbers against Humbert. The Frenchman won an impressive 83 percent of second serve points on Wednesday en route to his win. The Brit will also have to take advantage of the crowd’s support.
Prediction: Humbert in 2
Head-to-head: Davidovich Fokina 2-1
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came through the arguably tougher match of the two on Wednesday, dropping the first set against James Duckworth but rebounding to win 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4. Jakub Mensik didn’t face a break point in his second round win over Reilly Opelka, and his big serve will have to be on display against someone who likes long rallies like the Spaniard. The last time the two played, Davidovich Fokina stunned Mensik in a two-sets to-none comeback at the 2025 Australian Open. The Czech is a solid fast court player, and should use his weapons to get revenge in this match.
Prediction: Mensik in 2
