Andrey Rublev has already produced a couple of ATP Hamburg runs in the past–in 2019 he lost in the final to Nikoloz Basilashvili, then came back the year after to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas. Now he’s trying to grab another title in the north of Germany. Standing between him and the trophy is Flavio Cobolli, looking for the biggest success of his career. Who do you think will come out on top in this exciting final on the eve of Roland Garros?
Head-to-head: First meeting
Andrey Rublev really needed this one. Since winning Doha in February, the Russian had been in a slump and the new partnership with Marat Safin didn’t have any opportunity to flourish either. Who knows how the second-round clash against German wunderkind Justin Engel would have ended if the 17-year-old took the second set, but not for the last time this week Rublev responded well mentally. The 27-year-old has always been a killer at the ATP 500 level and now looks for his 7th title.
Flavio Cobolli will look for the biggest title of his career after winning Bucharest earlier this clay season. The Italian was just 2-8 on hard courts at the start of the year but has quickly restored his game to the level that he was showing all the way through 2024. Clay results have been a lot more consistent and while it wasn’t always pretty, he fought his way into this final with a comeback win against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. At the ATP 500 level, that’s his second final appearance after Washington last year.
Rublev and Cobolli have never played before. While it would be tough to say this is just about the experience that the Russian has (not only in ATP 500 finals, anywhere), it’s certainly going to be a factor. He’s desperate to restore his confidence and this would be a massive boost just before Roland Garros. Over the last few matches, he’s also demonstrated a more consistent level of play than Cobolli. The Italian might need to show he’s got nerves of steel here again.
Prediction: Rublev in 2
