The European indoor season continues in France, with an assembly of players aiming to finish the season strongly. In this piece, three French players will be on court on the second day in Metz as they look to ensure the title stays at home after Benjamin Bonzi won it last year. As always, we offer our predictions on who will advance to the next round. But who will advance?
Head-to-Head: First Meeting
Despite making it to the third round at Flushing Meadows, Ugo Blanchet is still without a win in the main draw of any ATP event this year, although he did secure a title at the Challenger level in Koblenz. He has another chance to tick the win column in his home tournament against rising star Learner Tien, whom he’ll play for the first time.
The American teenager reached his first ATP final in Beijing during the Asian swing, losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Regardless, it has been a superb season for a player who began the season outside the top 100 but is now ranked No. 39. Blanchet will be desperate for a win, and he’s shown what he is capable of on hardcourts. While Tien may not be an aggressive player, his serve consistency and court coverage should give him the edge in this one.
Prediction: Tien in 3
Head-to-Head: First Meeting
Aleksandar Kovacevic has still managed to maintain his top-100 ranking despite a largely lackluster season. However, he did win a Challenger title and reach the Los Cabos final earlier in the year. He will have a chance to secure an opening round win in Metz after being ousted at the first time of asking in Paris last week. His opponent, Clement Tabur, plays most of his tennis on the Challenger tour. Admittedly, he could be a tricky opponent, especially with the home crowd behind him; however, the American will have enough to get a win that puts him in the next round.
Prediction: Kovacevic in 3
Head-to-Head: Berrettini 1-0 Halys
The oft-injury-prone Matteo Berrettini is currently enjoying a decent, healthy run on tour since returning from injury in September. Despite early exits in Hangzhou and Shanghai, he reached the quarterfinals in Vienna and will aim to carry the momentum into Metz. His opponent in the first round is Quentin Halys, who, other than a semifinal appearance in Dubai earlier this season, has struggled to find consistency for most of the year. A healthy Berrettini remains a formidable opponent, and with the indoor conditions likely to complement his powerful serve and groundstrokes, this should be a routine win for the Italian against the jaded Frenchman.
Prediction: Berrettini in 2
