ATP Race Update: Alex De Minaur climbs towards, Bublik and Davidovich Fokina narrow the fight for ATP Finals spots
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

With the start of the hardcourt swing, things are taking on a new tone in the ATP Race to Turin, after Alex De Minaur was crowned champion at the DC Open and secured a spot in the ATP Finals qualification zone. Finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Kitzbühel Open champion Alexander Bublik have climbed positions and are on the verge of the top 10.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz remain unmovable at the top, with no possibility of anyone catching them in the coming weeks – despite neither of them being at the Canadian Open. Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper – also absent in Canada – remain in the top 5 without problems.

The ATP Race only measures points earned in 2025 – unlike the ATP Ranking which considers results from the last 52 weeks. It will be key to determining the year-end rankings, as well as the eight players who will qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

A vital part of the season begins, with the Canadian Open starting this week and then the Cincinnati Open. With a firm top 5 at the top, the last three qualification spots seem more open than ever, and last week's results only served to intensify the arduous battle for a spot in the ATP Finals, with Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz in a tight zone despite having accumulated important points in Washington.

De Minaur, Davidovich, and Bublik lead the charge in ATP Race gains

The big winner of the week was Australian Alex De Minaur, who added 500 points and is once again positioned within the top 8, taking a momentary spot within the ATP Finals qualification zone and displacing Ben Shelton and Casper Ruud. De Minaur added 500 points after securing his 10th title, after saving three match points against him, points that could prove key in an eventual ATP Finals position.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was the one who squandered the three match points and ended up empty-handed. The Spaniard failed in his closest opportunity to win his first ATP title, and despite the painful defeat, he added 300 important points, giving him a significant boost in the ATP Race, where he jumped from 18th place to 11th. The 26-year-old player is almost within the top 10 players of the year, and can dream of finishing the season even within the top 10 if he maintains his rhythm for the rest of 2025.

Alexander Bublik also received a new boost, champion of his second consecutive ATP 250 at the Kitzbühel Open, adding another 250 points this season. He is just behind Davidovich Fokina, in 12th place.

Precisely the three players who received boosts have left behind some of those who were at the top for a good part of the season: Tommy Paul (No. 13), the Miami Open champion, Jakub Mensik (No. 14), and Holger Rune (No. 15).

Alcaraz remains untouchable

Without being in competition this week, Carlos Alcaraz remains at the top with 7,540 points, far ahead of the rest of his pursuers and as the only player already qualified for the ATP Finals. Jannik Sinner – Wimbledon and Australian Open champion – holds second place with 6,000 points. The current qualification cutoff is 6,370 points, though it will decrease week by week as more tournaments distribute points. It's only a matter of time before Sinner can be considered mathematically qualified.

Further back is Novak Djokovic (3,380) in third place, another player remaining out of competition after Wimbledon who also won't play the Canadian Open. A similar case to the injured Jack Draper (2,940), in 5th place.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev (3,290) is in 4th position, and should he secure a couple of wins in Toronto, he could surpass Djokovic and return to the podium. In any case, he remains in a comfortable position at the top, and only a disaster could leave him out of the ATP Finals at the end of the year. For now, the top 8 is completed by Lorenzo Musetti (2,620), Taylor Fritz (2,575), and De Minaur (2,545).
