Second round action continues on Day 4 of the ATP Shanghai Masters, with more top players entering the fray for the first time this week–including former champion Daniil Medvedev, who will face rising youngster Dalibor Svrcina. As always, we at LWOT will provide predictions for every match on the slate, indicating which players are likely to advance to the next round.
Head–to–Head: First Meeting
Despite his lackluster performance throughout the season, Quentin Halys secured an easy win in the first round of the Shanghai Masters against Mackenzie McDonald. The French player held his serve all through to win in straight sets in just over an hour.
Contrastingly, Jiri Lehecka has had a great season, especially on hard courts. He reached his second quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam during last month’s US Open, helped the Czech Republic defeat the United States in the Davis Cup with wins over Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, on top of his Brisbane title earlier in the season.
While the Frenchman could be a dangerous opponent, the fast conditions will favor Lehecka’s serve and strong baseline groundstrokes. He should be winning this comfortably.
Prediction: Lehecka in 2
Head–to–Head: Medvedev 1 – 0 Svrcina
Former champion Daniil Medvedev is back at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he begins his journey against qualifier Dalibor Svrcina. Following a challenging first half of the year, Daniil Medvedev appeared to regain some form at the recently held China Open 2025, where he powered through to the semifinal before retiring against Learner Tien.
Having participated in only 13 Tour-level main draw matches throughout his early career, Dalibor Svrcina turned his 2025 win-loss record into the positive zone after breezing through the qualifying rounds.
The Czech youngster is expected to come out strong, while the Russian will aim to power through his own service games while attempting to neutralise points and lengthen rallies during return games to wear Svrcina out. In the end, the Russian will prevail if he is fully fit.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Head–to–Head: Rublev 3 – 2 Nishioka
Yoshihito Nishioka finally overcame a tough nine-match losing streak after advancing to the second round in Shanghai. The Japanese player didn’t lose a set during qualifying, allowing him to enjoy the thrill of victory once more, and he continued this momentum by surprising an in-form Alexander Shevchenko with a quick 6-1 6-2 in the main draw.
The challenge intensifies significantly next, though, as he faces 13th seed Andrey Rublev, a familiar opponent with whom he has traded wins on hard courts.
The Russian has dropped his last two matches after being eliminated in the Round of 16 at the US Open, and will be looking to snap the winless streak and manoeuvre his way back into contention for Turin. However, he is also capable of losing to anyone when in this form, and against a capable Nishioka, the possibility is even higher.
Prediction: Nishioka in 3
