No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic headline the action on Sunday at 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters. Last year they met in the final, now they’re on track to meet a round earlier. Will the new set of challengers turn out to be massive roadblocks on their way? Sinner is facing Tallon Griekspoor in their seventh head-to-head meeting as the Dutchman is trying to beat him for the first time. Who do you think will come out on top?
Head-to-head: Goffin 1-0
David Goffin had a shock run to Shanghai quarterfinals last year, including a win over Alexander Zverev. This time he’s also defeated a Top 10 player at this event already, taking down Ben Shelton in the second round. While the American was a little rusty, the kind of tennis Goffin played with way over 30% of his shots taken inside the baseline can only be described as vintage. He needs more of that, but Gabriel Diallo recently hasn’t been quite as explosive as in the spring. Maybe the magic continues for the veteran.
Prediction: Goffin in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Zizou Bergs advanced after Casper Ruud’s retirement, but they were deep into the third set and the Belgian probably could have taken that match anyway. Injury or not, it’s an important win for him as despite two ATP Tour finals earlier in the season, his form of late has been suboptimal. This looks pretty open with Francisco Cerundolo being a competent, but very erratic hard-court player. Maybe Bergs can apply a little bit more pressure here, attack the net and take time away.
Prediction: Bergs in 3
Head-to-head: Djokovic 1-0
Novak Djokovic didn’t have an easy time dispatching fellow veteran Marin Cilic in the opening round, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion seems pretty motivated for this event (unlike for most of the ATP 1000s he’s played this season). That helps as Djokovic’s results this year have only really stood out either at the Majors or when he was chasing down that 100th tour-level title. Yannick Hanfmann’s got some nice momentum going from the qualifying, but there’s not much he can do here if the opponent is hungry to take this.
Prediction: Djokovic in 2
Head-to-head: Sinner 6-0
These two have had some tight matches and maybe the 0-6 head-to-head is a little harsh on Tallon Griekspoor. Then again, he’s got that record against the most consistent player in the world right now. Shot-for-shot it’s extremely difficult to stop Jannik Sinner and Griekspoor doesn’t have that kind of flair or unpredictability that Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Bublik got him with this year. The Dutchman will hit his serve and forehand combo but even if he executes it well, it’s just not enough to surprise Sinner.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
