It should be an entertaining fourth day at the ATP Vienna Open with round-of-16 action set to continue in the Austrian capital. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Jannik Sinner vs Flavio Cobolli. But who will secure their spot in the quarterfinals?
Head-to-head: Medvedev 2-1 Moutet
Daniil Medvedev’s improved form over the course of the Asian swing suggests that the Russian should have enough to win this match, but Corentin Moutet should not be discounted. He has beaten the Russian already this year and pushed him to three sets in the most recent meeting earlier this month in the final in Almaty.
The Frenchman also looked sharp in winning his first round match against Damir Dzumhur for the loss of only three games – whereas Medvedev was not at his best in labouring past Nunu Borges. Equally, in the crucial moments, it is hard to escape the feeling that Medvedev’s power and experience might just give him a decisive edge. The Russian is after all a former-world #1 whereas Moutet has never been ranked higher than he is currently at 36th in the world.
Head-to-head: Zverev 2-0 Arnaldi
Alexander Zverev generally seems to enjoy indoor hard courts, with the still conditions helping his serve in particular. He does remain vulnerable to being rushed off the forehand wing by the best in the game but – with the greatest of due respect to Matteo Arnaldi – the Italian probably does not belong in that category.
He is having a fine season and has taken a set off Zverev in both of their previous meetings, which suggests that this won’t be an entirely comfortable day at the office for the second seed. But the end result of both of those matches – Zverev victories – suggests the German will be the man to reach the quarterfinals.
Head-to-head: Musetti 1-0 Etcheverry
This might be a tough ask for Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Argentinian has improved on hard courts, but he remains more significantly more comfortable on the clay, and his first-round victory over the inexperienced Nicolai Budkov Kjaer doesn’t necessarily tell us match about how this match will pan out.
Lorenzo Musetti has not, it must be said, been in sparkling form in the run up to this event, but the fourth seed has been performing solidly enough in recent weeks and got past Hamad Medjedovic without too many problems. More of the same should see Musetti safely into the quarterfinals at the ATP Vienna Open.
Prediction: Musetti in 2
