The final is set at the ATP Vienna and it promises to be a blockbuster match, pitting top seed Jannik Sinner against second seed Alexander Zverev in a rematch of the 2025 Australian Open final. Both players are former champions here with Sinner lifting the trophy in 2023, while Zverev claimed victory in Vienna in 2021. As always, we at LWOT will offer our prediction for the final, but who will lift the title for the second time?
Head-to-head: Zverev 4-3 Sinner
Sinner has been in imperious form all week and wasted no time in getting off to a great start against Alex de Minaur in the semifinals. He faced great resistance from the Australian #1 in the second set, but it only delayed the inevitable. Sinner got his 12th win against De Minaur, and his serve held up brilliantly in crucial moments. He is on a 20-match win streak on indoor courts and will be the favourite to lift his fourth trophy of the season.
Zverev played one of his best matches of the season to beat Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. Zverev made 83% of his first serves and didn’t face any break points in the match. He was experiencing discomfort in his shoulder at the start of the week, but it seems to have healed or is healing at a good rate, as evidenced by the serve numbers.
Serving is the biggest strength for Zverev in these conditions, but he will not only have to not only make a high percentage but also serve accurately to keep Sinner at bay and find a way to defend his second serve, which can be attacked. The problem for the German is that, apart from their respective first serves, it hard to think of anything that Sinner does not do better at the moment.
A particular concern will for Zverev will be the number of forehand errors he made in the last four against Musetti. Sinner’s compatriot was not good enough to expose those errors, but the top seed almost certainly will be. Zverev leads the head-to-head, but he hasn’t defeated the Italian in over two years, and I don’t see him doing that here.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
