Nishesh Basavareddy has finally found some form this week and has looked deadly in the first three matches. The question is whether he can maintain that when facing the No. 4 seed, Gabriel Diallo. 17-year-old sensation Darwin Blanch is also in action on Tuesday in Winston-Salem. Who do you think will advance to the third round?
Head-to-head: First meeting
Regardless of Borna Coric’s current form, grabbing an ATP Tour win at the age of 17 was a massive achievement for Darwin Blanch. The American is progressing along nicely, and that aggressive lefty game brings up a few very obvious comparisons. For now, let’s see if he can at least make things competitive against Alexandre Muller. The Frenchman tends to be successful against youngsters with the relentless counter-punching he can produce. His ball might be a bit too tough for Blanch at this moment.
Prediction: Muller in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
Hamad Medjedovic should be hitting the main tour with full force now, but there are still a few question marks regarding his physicality. Last week in Cincinnati against Carlos Alcaraz, he was already looking like he was about to collapse after a few games. It’s pretty hot at ATP Winston-Salem as well, but the conditions look a bit more acceptable, and the matches start pretty late. With his form trending up and Jacob Fearnley’s going the other way, he’s got a great chance here.
Prediction: Medjedovic in 2
Head-to-head: van de Zandschulp 2-0
Botic van de Zandschulp just recently took apart Matteo Arnaldi at Wimbledon, performing better in the key moments to take the match in straight sets. The Italian will be seeking revenge, and while he’s been comfortably the better player over the last couple of seasons, he still can’t quite put his game together and often hits himself off the court. Surely he can’t keep losing to van de Zandschulp in close circumstances every single time?
Prediction: Arnaldi in 3
Head-to-head: Carreno Busta 2-0
Looking back at Sebastian Baez winning this title two years ago is kind of wild, as the Argentinian never showed that kind of quality on hard courts ever again. In fact, he has recently been struggling regardless of the surface and remains high in the rankings only due to his strong performance in the South American swing in February. It’s probably going to result in a Pablo Carreno Busta win, even if the Spaniard is way past his prime and has been a bit of a mess on a physical level, especially.
Prediction: Carreno Busta in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
Nishesh Basavareddy had a prime opportunity to challenge the Top 100 this year, and while he earned his debut, it’s also fair to say he hasn’t fully capitalized on its potential benefits within the group. Getting three wins here is already a significant achievement and could grant him good momentum for the US Open. Can he also take down Gabriel Diallo? It’s tough to back him to do it with how strong the Canadian has been pretty much all season. But this match has insane potential if Basavareddy delivers.
Prediction: Diallo in 3
